Kyoto is quite compact and easy to navigate, but with so much to offer - 17 UNESCO world heritage Sites, 1,0 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, almost 100 Michelin -starred restaurants and countless small restaurants and bars -. it's just a little overwhelmed to get

day 1: Northwestern Kyoto

As Kinkaku-ji, the place where Ryoan-ji now stands was a family property in the 11th century. In the mid-13th century warlord acquired the land, built his house there and founded Ryoan-ji. Just like Kinkaku-ji, the temple was destroyed during the Onin war, but built up the son of the warlords there in the late 13th century. After lunch, walk another 20 minutes Ninna -Ji , the main temple of the Omuro school of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Founded in 888, Ninna-ji was just as Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji, destroyed by fire during the Onin War. Only nearly 150 years later, it was rebuilt, and to see the most of what you today comes from the 17th century. To get back to the center of Kyoto, you have two options. The easiest way is by taxi (about 30 minutes), or you can make some money and take the bus (Bus # 26) to Kyoto Station (about 45 minutes).

Start your second day in Kyoto on Nishiki market , which opened in the early 14th century as a fish market. Today is the covered arcade with shops, fed all kinds of food - think tsukemono (Japanese pickles), soymilk Donuts, and skewered octopus - and sweets, tea, souvenirs and kitchen equipment (be sure to Aritsugu to Pop, was sold since 1560 quality knife).

. Day 3: Uji and Fushimi Inari

you could spend days exploring only Kyoto itself, but very close to Kyoto are wonderful day trips including Nara, Kurama Onsen, and Osaka.

From Uji, take the JR Nara line to Fushimi to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine.
