My current favorite hostels in Europe
The last time I wrote about great hostels in Europe in 2011, and since then I have stayed in many, many new hostels. Some were wonderful; others I could not leave fast enough. Hosteling is very popular and established in Europe, and there is a growing "luxury" hostel trend, more amenities includes (and higher prices) for travelers. Since Hostels come and go and the quality can change quickly, I thought my 2011 Post an update is required. Here are what I currently have some of the best hostels in Europe for to:
( Note: The hostels in my old list are still solid and I have some, in this list.)
generator hostels
the generator is a hostel chain with locations throughout Europe. I have stayed in two of their locations - Copenhagen and Dublin - and they both loved. The hostels have great bars and restaurants, clean showers, comfortable beds, laundry service and very reasonable prices (10 Euro per night in Dublin!). My only complaints are that the wifi often slow and they invite you to breakfast, but have stayed in two of their locations, I would certainly stay in other. (They also have karaoke at its Copenhagen location.)
City Backpackers
I was here years ago and recently returned when my tour group in Stockholm was , The place was just as amazing as I remember. They still have a very nice cafe and alfresco dining / sitting area. Your beds and pillows are still super cozy and comfortable, and they have a large kitchen, a lounge, a sauna and laundry facilities. And you can not turn a corner without encounter in a public computer. City Backpackers was and still is one of the best hostels in Europe.
St. Christopher Barcelona
The hotel is right near La Rambla, everything about this place is brand new as the hostel just opened in summer 2013 I really love at the curtains dormitory beds and the giant bar / outside area next to the hostel. In general, I really like the brand St. Christopher. They offer fun, clean, cozy, and modern hostels throughout Europe.
The Flying Pig Amsterdam
This is still one of my all time favorite hostels. The facilities are standard and the price a bit expensive, but I love the atmosphere. While this hostel is popular with travelers looking to relax and smoke, the bar was very busy at night with people who do not want to get high. The staff here is what really makes this place special. You hang out with guests, experts in the city and are always helpful. Moreover, this hostel has some of the most comfortable beds and fluffiest pillow every hostel I've ever stayed. The Flying Pig has two locations in the city, and I prefer the uptown location because it is smaller and lighter to meet people.
The people behind the Flying Pig also run Winston, another gîte. This place has a great bar and is next to a rock club that presents a lot of good local musicians. Tell all I say "Hello!"
Goodnight Hostel
I, which have to this Lisbon hostel stumbled (mainly because it was super cheap) and I m really glad I. Conveniently located in the city center, they offer free dinner and sangria, and they organize evenings. There is a small meeting room, and the showers had great water pressure. This small hostel is very intimate and makes it easy to meet other travelers. This was one of the best hotels I've stayed in during 2013 have a sister hostel called Good Morning Hostel, which I can only assume is just as good.
Skanstull Stockholm
My second hostel in Stockholm City Backpackers, this hotel was renovated in 2013 and features a brand new, large kitchen and living room. They have done a really good job, and the kitchen is one of the nicest I've seen in a hostel in a long, long time. The hostel is quite small overall, but has a close-knit setting always other people to know.
Gallery Hostel
This "luxury" hostel in Porto, Portugal, is probably one of the best I've ever stayed in and is definitely a new addition to my "all-time favorite" list. It's not the cheapest in Porto but this hostel / art gallery offers homemade Portuguese cuisine, a backyard, free after-dinner drinks, a game room, and the friendly staff dedicated to making sure everyone gets to know everyone. The art on the walls is by local artists and is for sale (for those who do not travel on a budget). I loved them organized by the nightly dinner the best.
Hostel Mostel
The hostel has locations in three cities in Bulgaria (Sofia, Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo), and they all follow the same principles: comfortable beds, free breakfast, free dinner, free beer, shots, a pool table and free, fast Wi-Fi. I honestly do not always offer a hostel seen so much free stuff for travelers. Normally everyone stays in all Hostel Mostel sites so you often run into the same people. I found they had a lot, so book in advance if you want to stay here
So there you have it. My current favorite list of hostels in Europe. Hostels on the old lists (a list, the list two) are still wonderful, but consider also hike this at the next Euro. And if you're looking for even more value for your money, read my guide on how to find cheap accommodation.
