Why this independent backpacking Nomad Many people hate going on a cruise -

Two towering cruise ships docked cruises. "Maxi-boats filled with oversized people." There is a special contempt for them among hikers and other "real" travelers. "Cruises are not traveling," people say. "You do not get to experience the local culture. You do not get the places to discover visit. They are of place shuttled in prefabricated tours in huge groups to place." Cruises forged travel for people who want to pretend they are considered to a place traveling without doing an actual driving.

I've been my whole life for three cruises. The first was when I was 16 years old and went with my family in the Caribbean. I remember to Cozumel, Mexico and sneak Kahlua drink on the beach. (Sorry, Mom and Dad. I think you had some time to find out!)

The next cruise was a Dave Matthews cruise with some friends (I'm a big fan Dave Matthews). It was three days in the Bahamas and watch Dave Matthews Band playing on a boat. It was epic.

My last trip was five years ago. I was on the Inside Passage of Alaska with my family. It was wonderful to see glaciers, and I even got to see killer whales, hunt, kill and eat a porpoise. The whole trip was I love cruises for the same reason that everyone else hates them a lot of fun

. Because cruises are not traveling

A cruise is a playground for adults on the sea .. It's like Las Vegas, except on the water. There is a huge buffet, pool, random activities, large glasses of fruity drinks and sheer gluttony. It's bacchanalian fun.

A cruise is a holiday.

For me, the definition of the trip is is going out to explore and learn about the world and the cultures that inhabit it. It is about the discovery. A holiday, on the other hand, is simply a break from day to day life, where you can relax and do nothing.

And I think that distinction is often missed by the cruise-haters. First off do not have to explore always through unknown lands to be at home, to navigate through primal forest trekking, or with the bus system of Calcutta. No, sometimes all you want to do, is relax . You do not want to do with anything or plan anything. You want a break. You want to close your mind a little.

If you see a cruise as a tourist, you will be disappointed. If you see it as a holiday, then I think it's easier, all the Disney-like atmosphere to accept it.

After all travel serves a purpose.

Next week, I'll go on a Royal Caribbean cruise with my friend Jason, my intention is, by the pool, cocktail in hand sitting and working on my tan So. I plan to 10 pounds at the buffet win and then process them in the gym. I'll Mini Golf on a boat and sleep late. I'll keep closed my computer.

I'm going on vacation.

And I'm really looking forward. I could use a break. I'm a little burned out. Between three conferences in the past month, edited my last book, traveling this site back and forth from Asia, a tour in Japan, run, and just trying to live life, I'm frazzled.

Many people think traveling and what I do, is a 24/7 vacation. It is not. It takes work to try to make your way around the world to find out. It's fun to work - but it's still work. Take running into a store on top, and see from the morning until the early hours of the morning run nonstop. It dehydrates you, especially if you do it 365 days a year.

So, tired and exhausted, I'm going on vacation recharge my batteries.

Crowded pool deck on the cruise ship

I admit that it is a long time since I was on a cruise. I have no idea what to expect. I have never been an adult on a normal cruise just trying to relax and be "tourists" a. This is new territory for me.

I can hate. I know that I've been to the Shore Excursions'm not looking. I hate these things. I see them all over Europe, and it is just a big mass of people. Try to see the Acropolis in Athens, as 937 439 282 349 tourist groups from the cruise ship are also there. It's annoying. I plan my own boat trips make

In addition, I am going to the world on the largest ship -. The Oasis of the Seas - and I can just be too big and too overwhelming to find. Who can say? All I know now is that I am giddy with excitement about my vacation

But I will do so, not that a cruise is nothing more than it really is: a vacation.. It's a week where your mind can shut down, someone else can eventually your life and your only concern is what begins the buffet.

Because we all need a vacation plan.

This is this intrepid Nomade why a cruise - and who knows, I can enjoy myself
