Away from home for the holidays
growing up, I often spent Christmas with my friend Matthaus. In fact, it often seemed like everyone knew I spent Christmas at his home. After all had their family Christmas, we gathered together there to celebrate as friends. Even after college, my friends and I managed to still Christmas in Matthaus to spend on that tradition hold as well as our lives grew apart.
I did not go home for the holidays in four years. I am often asked whether I come home and miss in the spirit of Christmas. It must be hard to be away all the time, the people say. But while there are things about the holiday season that I miss you, I'm not bothered by it. My family does not celebrate Christmas, and most of my friends are now distributed throughout the country.
When I think of Christmas, I think of the time with friends and family to eat food, and go to holiday parties. The months before Christmas build excitement not only for the day, but for the whole time of the year. But overseas, you do not have that built-up, end-of-the-Year, holiday season you feel surrounds. They are always in motion, and it is hard to get in the spirit. When people think of the holiday season, they think of the cold, snow, many decorations, work parties, lighting and 24-hour Christmas music on the radio. But as a traveler, you will not experience that atmosphere. Even if you are in the cold and snow in New York to be from friends and family away reduces your holiday cheer.
Travel in New Zealand traveling with a lot for the first time, I have heard many comments how sad they are during this time to be away. But I think as nice as it is to be with friends and family to be away for the holidays can be a great experience.
My friend calls a Christmas of travelers an "Orphan Christmas." You have to not love. Stranded by your loved ones, everyone missed the feeling of home. And we all get together, because this and our own mold "at home." We must, if we do not want to spend the day alone. All we have is each other, which I feel is a good thing. This focuses less on gifts and more on just to be different, and a good time. Coming together with other travelers also gives you the opportunity to learn how the holiday is celebrated around the world.
And this spirit is what the holidays are supposed to be about anyway.
Celebrating in New Zealand, I have learned, they do lunch instead of dinner Christmas. to celebrate the British love the day after Christmas (Boxing Day) to obtain German goodies ahead of the holiday, and Swedes and Finns presented open on Christmas Eve. And the food people eat is just as diverse as the celebrations. (Do not get in the way of British and a roast or Aussies and a grill!) We all bring something different to the table, and which can for an interesting, to make it unique and fun holiday.
Being this season away from home can be a challenge. They say necessity is the mother of all inventions. It is also the mother of all travel relations. People want to be with others, and bond over a holiday is a great way to get around with others.
A Traveler Christmas no gifts, no formalities and no pressure. It's just about the food, the people and the day. And can you really be a renewed appreciation for what is in this season.
