Munich is better than Berlin
After less than enthusiastic about Berlin, I had low expectations for Munich. I knew only a few things about the city: Oktoberfest there, Hitler there had his coup, and it has been a famous (and overrated) AM. Everyone has heard Munich, but I knew nothing about it really. But I had so far not impressed with Germany and wondered if Munich would disappoint me.
It did not. I loved Munich. Munich was what Berlin was not, it was nice and had a downtown, big parks, good food and friendly people. I spent four days in Munich, and I can see why so many people love the city when Oktoberfest is not there. I do not doubt that I enjoy 100,000 people drinking in tents, but all that drinking would take away from the beauty of Munich has to offer.
Munich was my time after many long nights in Berlin to decompress. has a late booking me. in a hostel that also doubles as a hotel for large groups of young prepubescent Large groups of Scottish children moved around and were eventually followed by large groups of Spanish children. I really do not like children, so it was a bit trying annoying to do with kids around work around me screaming.
Fortunately on the road was a beer hall. The hotel staff wrote some Bavarian dishes for me down to try, and I ventured over to see what a Bavarian beer hall actually looks. Let me tell you-it's crazy! Long tables of people eating together squashed with big steins of beer and ridiculous heart-clogging. Squeezing between some people, I dug in a really good beer and some dishes that were sure to pack on the pounds. Their names escape me now, but they were really delicious. I was pleasantly surprised by Bavarian cuisine.
Munich has a lot of beauty in itself, and was roaming a nice change from the industry Berlin around the city. One day, on the way to the Bavarian history museum, I walked unknowingly past the English garden (very nice). One of the best things about running around is that you never know what you see. In the gardens, I stumbled across some surfers. Well, apparently these guys are fairly well known, but I had no idea that it existed. It was riding a great thing to see-a few surfers on the waves of a river, as from under a bridge barreled out. Snow had fallen just in the mountains, melting in the city and make this river all to see the sights. My iPhone came in handy, and I was able to get this video:
I'm glad I saw it because the Bavarian Museum was a complete waste of time. Fortunately, on Sunday, it is only to give one euro, so I cheated not to feel. There was no history or anything-just a bunch of old relics and artifacts. And while the armor was something interesting for me to learn about museums are a place of history and here there was none. I was out in 15 minutes. I much preferred the residence. This is the old palace of the Bavarian Prince, where you get to see the crown jewels. Not as lavish as Versailles, the palace is very German, that it strictly, practical and easy.
The most interesting part of my visit was the rock concert. Originally, I was couch surfing goes, but it did not work. However, the hosts and I meet for a night on the town. You, my friends, and I went to a large multi-artist concert on Saturday evening. I had no idea what the band said (I do not speak German), but the atmosphere was great, and to try to speak broken English with the locals was quite amusing. How bad learning English words.
Munich was an interesting place to visit. It lacks the industry, creative atmosphere Berlin, it's a bit more cozy, the parks are beautiful, and the Bavarian beer hall environment is a lot of fun. Moreover, the food, while hearty, delicious. Munich is a great stop on the backpack trail, but even if you are not on, take some time to see in Munich.
