Rotterdam, Amsterdam Rival city

Rotterdam, Amsterdam Rival city -

Rotterdam, The Netherlands
The fires were everywhere, destroying everything in their paths, as the bombs fell head. When it was over, there was nothing left but empty crater and people looking to recreate.

Unlike many other Dutch cities Rotterdam was completely destroyed in World War II. But it turned the end of the war in a chance to build in a modern city again and shed its old 17th century look. Now Rotterdam is filled with steel buildings, wide streets, skyscrapers and other signs of modernity that many other cities in Holland deficiency. If it was an urban city in the Netherlands, I believe it would be Rotterdam.

Unlike other Dutch cities that are themselves built around a small center, which in Holland are still feel like you're making, Rotterdam has wide roads, no real "center" golden age, only a few historic buildings and many skyscrapers. Rotterdam entry gives you an out-of-Holland experience. About 40% of the population of Rotterdam is not in the Netherlands, and you will not see hordes of young stoners coffee shops and red lights crossing.

The strange buildings called the cubes in the city of Rotterdam
Rotterdam is famous for its architecture, with many tips companies in Europe based here. The town has many schools of architecture and even a funky Architecture Museum. Around the city you will find many interesting buildings in a modern style built, the Dutch style, or that strange 50s industrial style nobody really likes. Since the city is more widespread than it used to see all the interesting architecture may take a while, as you have to walk around quite a bit. My favorites were the Overblaak dice that industrial-looking building next to them, and the Architecture Museum.

While Amsterdam canals, historic houses has, Van Gogh, and the red light district, Rotterdam has the art, festivals, multiculturalism and architecture. It is a much more eclectic / arty city than his great rival. Besides the many schools of architecture, there is a great indie culture here, and you will find many streets dedicated response to those "arty" types. In this sense, it makes perfect sense that Rotterdam (free) festivals often have the whole year. While I was there, there was a jazz festival and the following week some arts festival would come.

Market Hall in Rotterdam
Amsterdam is an expensive place to travel, but not Rotterdam. Many of the attractions in Rotterdam are only around five euros, and the museums are free on Wednesday. On weekends you can visit the large market near the metro station Blaak. It's a good way to get cheap food and mingle with the locals. For a great view of Rotterdam, head down to the euro mast. This is the tallest building in the city and offers panoramic views of the surroundings. You can even see The Hague from him! The tower has a great audio guide you to tell the story of the city, and some days, you rappel even the tower

One thing to skip -. The Rotterdam Museum. I always visit the historical museums. One can not tell where the city now, if you do not know their past. I've seen some bad, but this was terrible. There is a video tour that requires each video to see before you go, so you do not go at your own pace. That would not such a problem if the video had English subtitles. He does not do it. It's all in Dutch. Rotterdam has some great museums. That was not one of them.

Just an hour away, Rotterdam is a good place to contrast with Amsterdam. Too often people sit in coffee shops in Amsterdam and think that the Netherlands is. But there is much more to the country and Amsterdam rival city is to start a good place to explore. The city strikes me not as Amsterdam or Utrecht to do, but all in all those with a few days should check it out.
