When life gives you lemonade
I have often complained about how hard it is to travel and work at the same time. Normally something and sacrificed it is working normally. I like to travel more than I like to work on this page. And I have for days to catch up on things when I could be out hanging with new friends.
However, this site is usually brings me more lemonade than lemons. Like how a day in the past month I opened my inbox to find this email:
"Hi Matt,
My name is Maria from Penguin / Perigee Books I voted for by your blog. a while, I found by Chris Guillebeau site. We are interested in publishing your ebook "How to travel to the world $ 50 per day" as a print book. We think it would be a great inspirational book for people to be.
is this something that you are interested, I'd like to talk more with you about this over the phone.
Sincerely,
Maria "
often told me I should write a book about my travels. (And not only my mother!) Tell me I have an interesting history and it would be cool to read a book. But I've never really given it much thought. No one really wants to read a single man to travel about the world, is not it? There is a reason guy versions of Eat, Pray, Love off never. Moreover, the more I travel, the less special I know is I am. Many people do this, and I'm just like everyone else. My story is not unique or even interesting. I really do not think I have to give much in the way of a book. In addition, I'm lazy and I would prefer to write as a book.
Plus a book deal, I need to get an agent, you write a proposal to buy it around, and then maybe I would find a publisher for it. Or maybe not, and have been in vain everything would work. The book industry is not as strong as it used to be, after all, especially Borders has now closed. Why bother, if I could do something more attractive in Europe?
But here was a book deal directly landing in my inbox for a book I've written. An offer by the publisher judge who me everything would be avoided hard work. It was an offer, wrapped and tied with a bow for my recording.
Now that was worth thinking about.
opportunity often knocks only once. Although I was skeptical about the seriousness of the offer and what would I have to give, the more I thought think about it the more I realized I would be a fool to turn down this offer. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. I could not say no, even if it meant (and it does) change my plans. (Plus, it was a childhood dream to meet a real author!)
So I an agent to negotiate all the fine print, and the ink at the time of the contract is drying. Certainly, by the book deal with I give the right to sell up to my ebook on my own and is a lot less money to get per book, but it increases the range of my book and this website. It is not all about the money after all. And there is something to say, to go into a bookstore can and see my book on the shelf. Abandonment of direct sales aspect is a book worth much.
The book is only the beginning of 2013 published the editor in print and I both want it for the summer travel season, and letterpress printing cycles work because of the way, I missed 2012 deadline the summer. (I probably should not let the original e-mail sitting so long in my inbox.)
But the more I think about it, I'm happy about it. It means I have to fast not hurry a manuscript to them and my current trip cut short. (For the print edition, I need basically the size of the book to triple). The new date will give me some time, it thoughtfully to relax and write. I'll probably spend a little more time in Asia, relax on an island with nothing but me and my laptop.
Sometimes my site takes me away from my travels and it's all lemons. But then, other times, it allows me childhood dream to meet an author, to travel the world and live in a pretty amazing life. And then I realize this site is not lemons, it's all soft drinks, no matter how much I might complain sometimes.
This book could not make me Rick Steves (or maybe it-watch is out, Rick!), But I will be able to one day look back and say: "You know, if I a book was published, and it was great. "
