The Saturday City: Vancouver
It is located in British Columbia, Vancouver is the largest city in Western Canada and the third largest in Canada. It is known for its natural beauty is known, as it is nestled between the mountains and the sea. Vancouver is one of my top ten favorite cities in the world
Vancouver proximity to the sea and the mountains makes for an excellent location. Within a few minutes to get from downtown to the mountains or to the beach. Vancouver is a dream for city dwellers who need fresh air, but do not move completely in a rural area.
Vancouver is just over 100 years old, and his namesake, Captain George Vancouver sailed through the first Narrows in 1792. The first settlement on the downtown peninsula was Granville, located on the site of today's Gastown. Its location and harbor made it an excellent place for a harbor, and Vancouver soon became the largest port in the region. Today it is still Canada's main western port and the introduction of the ground for most cruises on the Inside Passage.
Vancouver is perhaps best known for its scenic beauty and the chances of its natural environment. Surrounded by water on three sides and crowned by the North Shore mountains, Vancouver is a good starting point for discovering the many outdoor activities. In less than an hour I walked from downtown to the mountains to explore the Capilano area to overcome my fear of heights on the Capilano Bridge, walking through rivers and ends in a random seaports because I forget what bus I had to get off at
true calling of Vancouver comes from this mixture of nature and man - .. from city to mountain and back in a day
main Park in Vancouver is a jewel among the city parks worldwide. It might not be the biggest, but Stanley Park is unsurpassed. Located on the outskirts of the city, this park is a haven of peace in an already relaxed town. The park features an aquarium, beaches and miles of hiking trails that let in the natural dissolve while still only a stone's throw away from the city. It makes for a great lunch location, a place to walk or hike, or a place to just relax. In the park, you do not hear the sounds of the city. It's easy to relax here without the crowds you in Central Park or Hyde Park to see.
For foodies, Vancouver is a delight for those who love Asian cuisine. As Canada's main western port, immigrants from the Far East long Vancouver have called home. This has a high Asian population lead to a city and Asian cuisine at every turn. Sushi, Chinese and some amazing Korean food can be found all here. Vancouver is home to the second largest Chinatown in North America after San Francisco
Vancouver is a hip city -. There a lot of Seattle, and a cross between Melbourne and Sydney reminds me. Walking around, everyone is relaxed, friendly and very "cool". The buildings are ultramodern, and there are cafes and restaurants everywhere outdoors when the weather is nice. And there is also the wonderful Granville Park, a collection of eclectic shops and restaurants for the yuppy liberal in all of us. I found some amazing food while I was there and even stumbled upon a large local artist. I watched them set for half an hour. Good food, good music and good wine is a nice way to spend a weekend afternoon.
I've never heard anyone say anything bad about Vancouver, and I suspect I probably never will. With so much to like - from its food to its atmosphere of its location - it can be really little bad to say
There are many cities that I love in the world, but some I would move .. Vancouver is one that I would move. It's so cool.
