Paris is not a Touristy Destination
As winter the days are getting colder and more, I find that people start to think travel: warmer places, tropical beaches and spring travel. My inbox is filling up more than normal with questions on where to escape, what, and to see things to do. And lately there was a common theme for these emails. People want to avoid the "touristy" things
"I do not want to go to Paris. It is too touristy. Where else can I go that how it is?"
I cringe, when I see statements like this. I understand the desire to discover places and find hidden treasures. We want to have a look at the local life. We want to be Indiana Jones and discover the feeling that we would be and to experience something new, not simply connect a bunch of other tourists and to buy in mass consumption.
It is good to explore something else, and to see what. Not for tourists Disneyfied But the idea that just because a place is popular is "too touristy" become and thus is ruined crap.
Paris is not as touristy.
Neither is New York City.
Or Bangkok
Or Cairns
, or any other city in the world
, the problem is not the goal -... the problem is where you go when you're there. The only thing that is touristy are the points that you choose to see. The beaten path is defeated, because it is very popular and everyone wants to see it. Why do the crowds clutter around the Eiffel Tower? Because it's amazing. Why do people flock to Times Square? Because it is iconic.
But if you are sick of tourists and want a to avoid these spots "nice atmosphere". Venture away from the crowds. Odds are good that you will not find them a few blocks over. 0% never stray from the path. To say a city of millions of people is "tourist" is to focus on the tourist attractions and then say that the city / country / region as it is.
And that is simply not true.
I live in New York City. Every day thousands of tourists wander through the streets. I do not mind. I see them rarely. Why? Because I do not walk around Times Square clamoring to see the Wall Street bull, or fight my way to the Met.
Instead, I hang in local neighborhoods and shops that most tourists do not always find or go to.
If you only are the major attractions to visit, you will find anywhere touristy. Walk away from this area and the head of an alley and into a new neighborhood, and suddenly you're surrounded by locals and experience local life.
, if you cringe Next time on all tourists, look at your surroundings. Are you in a famous, very popular area? Then change where you are. Do not the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre, skip and make sure to go to the Champs-Elysees. But then go ahead - you will leave behind the crowds that never ended, that a block carriage, and you are free new to explore all areas untouristy itself
And once you start to do that. They will never call touristy repeatedly every city.
