As the city of Berlin to conquer -

Berlin is a huge city. I knew it was big, but until I decided to explore it on foot, I never knew how big. I came here for five days with the idea that I would see all the major attractions some of the not-so-major sights and get a feel for the city. I do not have the chance much of Germany capital, to see the first time that I was here, and I had hoped that this visit would be to correct that.

But despite my intentions, I achieved little in five days. Berlin is simply too big and spread. My original purpose was to write a post, which in five days to do in Berlin. But after realizing how hard it was to get around and see the sights that post was to write impossible. This city is simply too overwhelming

So instead, here are some ways you can avoid my sightseeing errors, maximize the time in Berlin have, and to make the most of your visit.

General Tips

Rent a Bike

Biking in Berlin, Germany is easy and cost effective Walking around Berlin takes (and waste) a lot of time. However, the city is a great place for a bike ride. There are separate lanes for cyclists, so it's easy, without the fear of riding to be hit by a car. Most residents bike around the city, and while I was a bit nervous when Uncornered market first proposed, at the end of the day I was really happy to Berlin are biking. It provided a quick and easy way to get around, and bicycles costs to rent

Take a free hike -. New Europe operates a long and informative tour in part, begins at the Brandenburg Gate and takes 3.5 hours. It takes you through the center of the city, showing you all the highlights, are you a story, and will help you get oriented.

Essen cheap

to a city to assess how cheap it is through food, and the food in Berlin is incredibly cheap. And not just the street food (you can Currywurst can be found everywhere!), Kebabs and quick pizza, either - the restaurants here are a bargain. You can find a lot of meals for less than 5 €. I recommend eating in Mustafa. It is known for the best kebab in Berlin. The exaggerations are true - the lemon, mint, fresh vegetables! Mouth watering.

East Side Gallery

a huge section of the Berlin wall left standing and artists were invited to paint a part of it, represent the hope and violence. Now, the East Side Gallery is one of the best outdoor art exhibitions in Berlin. I was really moved by some of the pictures.

Jewish History Museum

Jews have faced a long and hard way in Germany. She was an important part of the population, even though they were discriminated against highly. The museum shows the arrival of Jews and their contributions in the whole of German history and the hardships they face. It does not go into much depth about the Holocaust, because there is a wonderful separate museum for it. But like all museums in Germany, which is huge and will need a few hours to explore properly.

The Holocaust Memorial

Located in the middle near the Reichstag, chronicles the Holocaust Museum "the Nazis (officially called" the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe ") treatment and extermination of the Jews. the monument consists of concrete slabs which a sense of confusion and agitation to create, as you wander through them. Below is a museum, which follows different families in the Holocaust. It creates a very personal and moving way about this terrible blight on human history to learn.

Treptow Park

in the eastern part is the Berlin, this park near an old abandoned amusement park (which can also be visited). it is a popular place to bike around, and there are a number of beer gardens and a small island near where they a have weekend flea market. Additionally, you can rent boats and canoes and cruise the adjacent river.

Templehof Park

in the southern part of the city, this park is actually used the site of the old airport during the Berlin Airlift after the Second World War, when the Soviets blockade Berlin tries. Well, there is a large park with a lot of plaques and information on the old airport. It is not the best park in Berlin, but it's cool to be able to go to a piece of history.

German History Museum

Germany a very long history, and this museum has to start a detailed report on the country, from the Roman period time ~~ POS = HEADCOMP. It is organized by time periods and has many artifacts. It is huge, but so, when you visit, make sure that you plan, you will spend at least two hours. Skip the audio guide, though; I did not find it to be so good.

DDR Museum

This museum focuses on life in East Berlin. It is separated into the various aspects of everyday life: food, clothing, education, fun, music, etc. It provides a good window, as the citizens of East Berlin lived (the Communist side). One thing that I found interesting was that the conformity of life under the communists to escape, it was normal for people to go to nudist beaches.

Hang in Tiergarten

Berlin's central park is an excellent place to relax, walk, bike and hang out. It is one of the most beautiful parks in all of Europe, in my opinion. There is a war memorial for Russian soldiers, and you can also visit the nearby Reichstag (Germany parliament) and the Brandenburg Gate.

Checkpoint Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie, a famous statue and icon in Berlin, Germany [1945011sehenDies] is the infamous gateway between the former East and West ~~ POS = TRUNC. There is a reconstruction of the checkpoint here, complete with fake soldiers (and many tourists take pictures). The nearby Museum was created in 1963 by Rainer Hildebrandt. It has a lot of pictures, information and videos about people who tried to flee the East. A word of caution, however: the museum is really tiny, it's hard to maneuver to make because of the large crowds. Avoid middle to go day and on weekends.

Take a boat tour

The Spree through Berlin flows, and there are many canals and waterways, where you can take a boat tour. It is very relaxing on a warm day.

depend on "beach"

A great summer activity carries on hanging out "beach". Different areas of the riverbank (especially opposite the central station) have "beach bars" where people lounge in beach chairs, drinking beer and enjoy the sun.

The biggest and most impressive church in Berlin was the cathedral built at the turn of the 20th century as an expression of imperial power. It is in addition to the Museum Island in the middle, and admission is 5 €, and you can go for a nice view over Berlin Mitte climb to the top of the dome.

Topography of Terror

This open-air museum documents the terror and horror of the Nazi regime. The SS and the Reich Security Main Office were located at this point. It also consists of excavated prison cells that have been removed from a remaining section of the Berlin Wall.

At the end, I am glad that I came back to Berlin. I did not see what the fuss was about for the first time, but after this visit, I enjoy Berlin more. It's still ugly, but the art, the music, and the food make it be an energetic and happening place. Although I can not live here forever, I would be happy again and visit - over and over again
