The Saturday City: Quito
High in the mountains, Quito is above the capital of Ecuador. Outside of Rio, Buenos Aires or Bogota, I have to always be South American cities in the image in the prime of life - up in the past and only decline to the left. I had always thought, Quito dirty, dingy, a bit uncertain, and to be with a pocket of modernity. I'm not sure why I thought this way -. Probably too much American media and experiences in Central America, I put together lumped
Anyway, I came without high expectations after Quito. And in the end, I loved this city. It was phenomenal. One day I was in Ejido Park and I came across an Ecuadorian version of "The Three Stooges" (old American slapstick group). My Spanish is not good enough to understand what they were saying, but their slapstick was funny. I sat watching for a while. All over the city, I discovered great meal of delicious outstandings, food markets, good western cuisine. Each city with good food is a city that I love.
Despite the height, I went and walked around the city, although sometimes my lungs felt like they explode. I enjoyed the mix of old world Spanish architecture and modern buildings. In addition, the city was much cleaner than I expected. After this year a lot of time in Central America, it was nice, a city to visit, which had not scattered garbage everywhere! If you do things for looking at Quito, I propose the following activities:
El Panecillo - "The Bun" and el Panecillo is a hill above the town. It is famous for its views and used to contain a temple before the Spaniards came. On the hill is the statue of the Virgin Mary, which was built in 1976 and is 41 meters high
Architecture -. Quito is home to a number of colonial and well preserved houses. The two best can be found at an alley called La Ronda. The first is the Casa de Benalcázar, one of the early founders of the city, and the Casa de Sucre, where Field Marshall José de Antonio de Sucre, a leader who lived in the Latin American independence.
the equator - given the name of the country, it should not be surprising that the equator in the country. It is located near Quito and you can visit the real and fake. Counterfeiting is a 30 meters tall monument, built between 1979 and 1982 to mark the point where the equator runs. However, if it got GPS and checked it turns out, they were gone. Now you can create a mini-museum visit homage to indigenous culture of Ecuador to pay, that the actual equator in it. You have a few fun scientific experiments there
Plaza de San Francisco -. Although you'll see many churches in the city, San Francisco is one of the oldest and most beautiful. The city's oldest building, the construction began in 1534, and it is in its design Baroque. There is a large square in front of the church, which is good for people to watch
Cotopaxi -. Approximately two hours south of Quito is the world's highest active volcano (19, 348 feet). It is a brilliant location for outdoor activities such as mountaineering, hiking, horseback riding and even camping
Parque Metropolitano -. Parque Metropolitano is a very good park and its height offers the best views from the city. You can find many good photos here and the immediate surroundings are very nice. I recommend to ask where the entrance is, before you find yourself (perhaps like me) only the tourist map with the "inputs" are all there on foot or be locked out, but the main reason.
The Old Town - Most visitors focus their time in the old town, which is a UNESCO site. The following schedule to find the city by the Spanish planning requirements, the central square in the heart. The course has the Palacio de Gobierno, the Cathedral and the Palacio Presidencial. Page and look for the Independence Square.
Museo del Banco Central -The Central Bank Museum has a good collection of artifacts from all Ecuador regions and cultures. There are many pre-Inca artifacts. I would have thought no bank museum, would have such things, but this does and it is not as expensive to obtain in
La Mariscal -. This is where all the expats and tourists seemed to be. I could not walk 5 feet without a Texas BBQ or Irish Pub popping. This neighborhood was trendy, filled with bars and chic restaurants. It seemed like the place during the night time with all the bars and clubs, but during the day to be, it just with tourists eat overpriced food was filled. The homes in the area are beautiful and colorful but.
Quito was completely different than I thought it would be. I expected a greasy South American city, but a city rich in culture, architecture found and filled with good food and locals. I met a man who worked for it for the American Embassy. He and his girlfriend had nothing good to say about Quito. For them it was a dangerous place, where people are trying to cheat you. I asked what he did for the message, and he said he dealt with all emergency calls American tourists place. This experience probably colored his perception of the city as he hears the bad stories. I was glad that I met him at the end of my trip. His oblique view would have been more guarded me while I was there. I found all the locals I interacted with very friendly.
I loved Quito. There is much to do here, there is plenty of history, a good nightlife, and friendly locals. And what more can ask of a city? I want to definitely go back there. If you make your way to Quito, here spend some extra time to enjoy the city. Operate the fly of not only as a place where the Galapagos Islands.
