Exploring Edinburgh
I've always heard good things about Edinburgh and I must say that it is fully up to its reputation. I'm here to celebrate my birthday tomorrow, and I could not be a better place to do it have picked. I love cities with a medieval feel-cities with paved streets, gothic architecture, tiny windy streets and Edinburgh has it all.
The city is just beautiful.
There are Gothic architecture all over the place, ancient cathedrals, a large garden, small, winding streets and historic buildings. All this is a castle surrounds, perched on a hill is high, where you can find a magnificent view of the old town and the modern area that surrounds it.
Today I went to the city. Although I use the word hate, the city is very charming. In many ways it feels like Bruges. It's medieval, well preserved, peaceful, scenic, and romantic. In addition to a big city for young people to be (nightlife), Edinburgh seems like a good place to have a romantic holiday. They come here with your significant other, spend some time in a bed and breakfast, explore the city and fall in love all over again. Well, I have not any of it, but I did fall in love with the city.
I took the free tour of the city which lasts three hours and takes you around the old town with the guide shows the main attractions and some history to give. One of my favorite things about European travel is that in every city in Europe, you will find a free walking tour. Sure, the stories they tell are cheesy, but I find that the tours a great way to orient themselves in a new city. You can learn a little about the city, orient, and to find the most important sights to see. Tomorrow I'll know me better to Edinburgh Castle head and some of the other sites on the tour with them.
One of the highlights of my day was the visit to the National Museum of Scotland. Rising six floors, the museum covers the history of Scotland from the ice age to the present day. You will learn the country's geological, political, social and economic history in the situation. I found the museum did a good job of explaining the history. They cover a lot of ground, and interactive videos and artifacts are really well explained.
My only beef with the place that the museum is not well spent. Design of each floor with a certain period of time to deal with, and while the order of the floors is good, then it is bad in every floor. Most are thematically, not chronologically, designed. While in this way you can see every aspect of Scottish life in detail, it makes the transition from one age or century to the next is a little hard to see. It takes a little work to find out where the ground begins chronologically and where it ends.
For you backpackers out there, I recommend Castle Rock Hostel. It is quite cheap, and they run a variety of activities, where you can meet other people. There is a large common area, and the hostel is located directly opposite the castle, provide amazing views. I have in recent days had a lot of fun here. The beds are comfortable, and it's great to have hot water. I know that does not seem like a novelty, but I have to travel in Asia where hot water is a novelty.
Edinburgh was a great city. I hate to often go to hyped-up points, because I am disappointed in the rule. Not this time. Edinburgh lives up to the hype. I have not even left, but I want to come again. I can not wait for the next three days to spend the city more, visiting the Castle, Rosslyn Chapel, exploring and windy in the city, lost narrow streets.
