Historical Walking Tours of New York City: The Good, Bad and amazing
New York City has many hiking tour companies - of free guides to food tours for neighborhood tours! to expensive private walking tours. This hotel has everything, and represented with so much history and culture and so many nationalities, it is not really surprising. New York seems to have a hike for every need.
I love hiking. I think they are a wonderful way to see a city, orient, and learn where you are by a local expert view. After all, why a place to visit if you do not want to learn it?
Last month, I decided to learn about my new home and took tours with most of the major historical tour companies (food tours are for a different location) to find the best. My feet still hurt, but I learned a lot about the history of NYC
Here is a review of all :.
Free Tours by Foot
These free tours are offered during the City of volunteer leaders, offered with several trips per day. You can download a wide range of tours (historical, food, culture) to find that all over the city. The company seems really in its diverse catalog - there is a neighborhood or tour kind for anyone. Most of the guides are actors and other long-term locals. They add a bit quirky story to every tour, and there are no set script, each tour is different based on your leadership. (My SoHo guide poetic waxed on gentrification.) Do I have taken a number of its tours and would not hesitate to take more. They are for tours in advance login required, but unless it is an important holiday, the tours are often full and you can show up only.
Context Travel
One of my favorite walking tour companies running Context tours around the world, and I mention them often on this website. They offer many tours in New York City, and I have taken three of them. I recently took the Brooklyn walk that taught me a lot about Brooklyn and the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. I am also a big fan of their lower Manhattan historic walk. If you really want to intellectual and educational trips, this is to choose the company.
They are not the cheapest tour company in town (tours run $ 70 per person), but fortunately you can "use nomadicmatt" the code 10% discount.
Walks of New York
The people you brought from Italy is now running NYC tours and use NYC-based leader. I love both their Italy tours and NYC tours. I went to the Met tour (amazing), which was hours of educational fun. Catch straight up in New York City and as a result, have limited offers, but their tours allow access, the others can not. They develop tours with Super Chef Mario Batali and backstage Broadway tours. I recommend all of their deals very -. "NOMADIC10." Really know the people behind them, what they do
Tours $ 35-50 range per person, and you can get 10% off with the code
Big Apple Greeter
Big Apple Greeter was founded in 1992 and connects visitors with local residents, they show their neighborhood for a day. These are not professional guides, only locals show you their favorite places. I have not taken a tour with this company in many years, but the concept is still in the spot, and it is something I do for the first time visitors highly recommended. Demand is high, so it is best to fill out the request form at least four weeks before your arrival.
Grand Central Neighborhood Tour
This is a free tour of Grand Central Terminal, highlighting the architectural history of the building and the environment. It is offered Friday at 12:30 and lasts 0 minutes. Grand Central has such an important presence in NYC history, I recommend taking this tour. And when you are done, go to the swanky Campbell Apartment for a drink (dress nicely, even if!).
Central Park Conservancy tour
Ever wanted to learn about the flora and fauna Central Park? Well, now you can. Several free tours highlight the various features of the park. Not only do you get around the park on a beautiful day to go, but you know what you are happy with a! The tours are free - you just have to show -. And last less than two hours
The Village Alliance
Every Saturday in the summer, the village Allianz free walking tours of Greenwich Village offers. The tours focus on the history and social culture of the region, so you get a lot of information on the Czech art scene, food and gentrification. It takes only 0 minutes, and all you have to do is displayed. It is a unique and very informative tour.
Big Onion Walking Tours
This is one of the biggest walking tour companies in New York. With PhD as a tour guide, this company runs about 30 trips on different days per month. I took the ban hike. I liked my guide, and she has made a lot of historical information, but much of it was not directly on prohibition related. While that was a personal disappointment (I'm a sucker for some Jazz Age!), I still liked really the tour and the company would recommend. The tours are only $ 20, making them one of the cheaper companies in the city.
The Wall Street Experience
Started by former broker, this tour Wall Street is one of the best known in the city ... and I'm not sure why. I was really excited to take their famous Wall Street Crisis Tour, but found it just terrible. I mean, wow, it was bad! You settle this as Tour Insider about the financial crisis (guides are ex-stockbrokers), but in reality it is only poorly explained the recent history that could be improved by anyone who spent a few minutes reading a book on the subject in order has, or CNN. Skip this one.
Wall Street Walks
This is another Wall Street tour, I disappointing. They offer tours similar to those offered by the company up, and I took their historic walk. It is clear that they read a script that was littered with historical inaccuracies. For example, after the 1920 bombing on Wall Street, it was J.P. (Died the previous years) Morgan's son, not Morgan himself, who decided to leave the damage to the facade of the building. They said, opposed them. (There were plenty of historical inaccuracies about the founding fathers and colonial NYC also.) Another company, I would not take a tour with again.
haveSome other tours that I've heard worthwhile use of reliable, trusted sources, but me the following non-:
- Greenwich Village Literary Pub Crawl - Actors from the Bakerloo Theatre project guide visitors around bars in the West Village and fill their heads with information about famous authors and drinking their stomachs with a lot of beer. Come thirsty
- Harlem Your Way - This tour visits the main attractions in Harlem, and on Sunday, the Gospel Walking Tour takes you filled to a music service in a neighborhood church (very popular with the Europeans).
your site is broken, soCall (212) 60-1687 for more information - Joyce Gold Tours of New York -. Joyce Gold is a tour veteran of 30 years is the history of the New York University teaches and performs very informative small group tours of the city. Her story oriented tours are very detailed. Go if you have a history buff
- New York Gallery Tours - This tour company leads to a number of galleries in New York City. It's a great opportunity to see up-and-coming art without finding out what are galleries worth seeing. The galleries visited change frequently, so check the website for travel information
- New York TV and Movie Tour - .. This tour takes you to all the famous spots you see in movies and on TV
Although many companies offer a lot of the same routes and routes, which the various guides and styles these companies are truly distinguishes each employs. If you have a few days in the city, I would mix and a few tour companies.
But no matter what company you. With on this list tour are a lot to learn, have fun, and discover parts of New York City would have otherwise not found Nothing can replace an insider's tour of a city
PS Always Be your guide tip - Free tour or not
All pictures (except for the top one) are taken from each company's website.
