Saturday Location: Portland, Oregon
Portland Oregon is often overlooked by tourists living in the shadow of cities like LA, Seattle, Vegas, Chicago or New York City , But Portland is one of America's unique (and liberal) city, famous for its outdoor adventures, microbrewed beer, green living, parks and boutique food.
My first trip was here a few years ago for Thanksgiving. While in Spain I have friends who lived in Portland and paid them a visit on the way to Asia. Then last year I came back and more time spent on my way food in town. What began as a "how" during my first trip to the love for my second shot. And now I can not wait Tour next month as part of my book to return. Portland has the very small list of cities came I would actually live.
What I love about Portland really is the high quality of life. It is to circumvent compact and light, there are good public transport is available, the locals are friendly, there is good food, it is environmentally friendly, and, most importantly, there is good beer.
I think Portland has a lot to offer travelers. It's a shame, this city is so often overlooked. But if you do it, make here (and should), here is my list of top things to do:
See Pittock Mansion - This is a stunning Victorian mansion in the western part of Portland that comes nearly a century. The villa has beautiful art and furniture collected by the original owners. You can download the villa itself or explore on a guided tour
Explore the Portland metro -. The Portland Underground Tour explores a series of tunnels in the Old Town section of Portland. The tours focus on the history of the tunnel in which hijackers their victims sold on board boats to work leaving the port. I love underground city tours; I think about learning how cities grow and build on itself fascinating (Seattle and Edinburgh Underground tours are particularly interesting), and this tour is no exception. They also offer paranormal related trips, but I tend to stay away from them away
walking downtown Portland -. The heart of the city is centered around Pioneer Square and is a great place to explore local shops, hanging in the square, and just walking around. There is nothing really special about this area, but I like grab a drink, sit in the square and people watch on a nice day.
Hang in the Pearl District - A very hip and trendy neighborhood on the tram. It is an excellent place to hang out and people watch while eating in town at some of the best restaurants. On the first Thursday of each month, all galleries open their doors for casual viewing and many serve wine and cheese. The famous Powell bookstore is also in this area. (I'm going to stop it as part of my book tour!)
Hike Forest Park - Located northwest of downtown in the hills, Forest Park is one of the largest urban parks in the nation at 5,000 acres. There are many good hiking and biking trails, see through this natural forest landscape winding be. Portland is known for its closeness to nature, and this is one of the best places in town to
Lan Su Chinese Garden "to get away from it all." - I love the tranquility of Chinese gardens. This beautiful urban retreat in the heart of Chinatown and features a pond, a teahouse, pavilions and many gardens. If you are on a budget, you can peer through the open window ornate and without paying entry much of the gardens, see
Enjoy Laurelhurst Park . - Developed a beautiful park of a horticultural expert from the same team that designed New York City's Central Park, it has a great atmosphere with good weather, with many locals and visitors enjoy the duck pond, the bike paths and the off-leash dog area
Visit Washington Park -. Washington Park is a classic city park with a whole bunch of trails that take you between the stands of trees to the hills and through the canyons. The park includes memorials for the Korean and Vietnam wars, the Holocaust and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and also offers magnificent views of Portland and Mount Hood. It's just another example of how "green" this city
gorge on food trucks -. Portland is known for its gourmet food trucks that dot every corner of the city. Around Alder St., you will find the main concentration of them, with trucks find any kind of food served can be imagined. When I'm in town, I tend to these food carts most of my meals to eat because the portions are so large, so that the food damn delicious, and the prices are reasonable. If you do not eat here, you are missing out on a huge part of Portland culture. You can even tours of all food trucks
drink some great beer -. Portland is one of the beer capitals of America, with more than 70 breweries in the city. Take beer seriously here and Portlanders will tell you they have the best beer in the country. (Although this might be a stretch.) Visit. Deschutes for a great selection of beers, and Widmer Brothers and Bridgeport Brewing Most of the breweries also redouble restaurants, and some you can take tours of the brewery also.
Portland is one of my favorite American cities, and I look forward to the fact that I be there twice this year (once for my book tour and later for a conference). The city gets some attention in the US, but not much abroad; Despite its domestic recognition, I believe still not enough people go visit. Make Portland one of your next destinations, especially in summer, when the city really comes alive.
