The Saturday City: Auckland
Auckland is one of my favorite cities in the world. That does not mean it is a bad city. I think it's only right to be boring, it is a business city lacks the character of Wellington or Queens. I think living in Auckland would be great. It is a beautiful city, there are many parks are around, and drive you to the beautiful beaches.
As a tourist I though the city lackluster found. There are a few things to do, but overall, you are not thrilled and Auckland is a bad introduction to how amazing New Zealand. Once you get out of Auckland, everything will be much better. But as to get to New Zealand, you will probably fly into Auckland, here are to do some things, if you get stuck can be found there:
- Bungy Jump: Home the first Harbor Bridge Bungy jump in the world is run, this jump by AJ Hackett, the renowned inventor Bungy jumping is operated. It is not as high as the Nevis Bungy jump in Queenstown, but if you do not want to start with a big jump, which is perfect
- Hauraki Gulf .: The harbor is a great place take a whale and dolphin-watching tour. You will always see some dolphins, but the whales are hit and miss most of the time. If dolphins and whales can be observed is not your thing, you can sail around the harbor. Auckland is home to most sailboats per capita in the world, so it is a good place to sail
- Auckland Bridge Climb know. If you never got the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb, you can do the 1 1/2 hour bridge climb here. Find a good view of the harbor and get the surrounding cityscape
- Sky Tower .: This tower stands at 328 meters and offers magnificent views of Auckland and the surrounding area. You can head out and go around the outside and even bungy off it! It is in the same complex as the casino where you can also find good restaurants
- Otara Flea Market .: Every weekend on Saturday there is a large Polynesian and Maori market, full of clothes is, food and local products. This is a great way to spend an afternoon
- Visit the North Shore .: Auckland North Shore is home to beautiful beaches. They are a great reason to get out of the boring city center. During the summer, many people and little parking on the weekends
- Auckland Domain .: This giant, beautiful park in the center of Auckland. this place in the summertime is filled with people running, playing sports, and just laying out. There are many beautiful walks and beautiful gardens.
One thing that I did not like about Auckland was the food. While I was never able to find a great sushi (outside the few places in Melbourne and Sydney, you can not really good sushi in this region), I managed to find a few gems. For food, I recommend Covo for Italian and Mezza Bar for the Middle East food. The top of Queen Street has some really good Korean and Chinese cuisine, though I forget where I ate. For decent Japanese, I recommend Kura, near the town hall. It is very good. If you are going to plan for dinner, I would reserve. They are the only place where I found decent sushi.
Each can be found in Auckland at some point. I would not stay there long. Even if you stayed only one day, you would not be missing much. To really get a feel for your jetlag twist, I propose full over two days in the city.
Thereafter leave for another exciting adventure around New Zealand.
