Saturday Location: Utrecht
After it never (and seen, despite his protests that there is nothing to see), I was determined to see Utrecht. My recent stay in Holland was in 06 and in 7 weeks I never seemed to make Amsterdam. I was overdue and Utrecht was a great place to go.
Utrecht is like a mini-Amsterdam. It is similar in design, but it lacks the crowds of Amsterdam. The old town is centered around an old church, the Duomo. It is an old gothic church and is outside nice but rather dull inside. Although it has some of the hallmarks of the Gothic style, it is only 1 stained glass windows, and most of the space is empty. Personally, the church is my favorite in Amsterdam.
over the course of the Domtoren is. In the 10s the church and tower were part of the same building, but a flood knocked out the area between them to provide the current location. You can climb the tower a good look at Utrecht get to, but we could not find the entrance and then skipped.
The main area of town near the Oudegracht is centered, or "old channel." it is the main channel in the city and along it are shops and a variety of restaurants. The restaurants are at a level below the street next to the canals.
The day we went, the weather was beautiful, and, for the first time all week was the sun. not to see the Dutch a lot of sun, so they can climb on it, when it comes to. The town was full and all the tables were taken along the channel. After a walk, we found an empty table and enjoyed some outdoor drinking by the canal, to work in the sun with all the Dutch, who do not seem to need on a Friday.
Outside Centre, Utrecht is very living and my friend drove us to different by a few quarters. We even got lost and ended up in the industrial center. Well, that's something you find in any guidebook.
Total Utrecht is a beautiful city and a good, relaxed alternative to Amsterdam. If you have a day or two, this city come to visit.
