The Great American Road Trip (Part Deux)
Americans have an ongoing love affair with the car and large open road.
. For the Americans, there is nothing to hold more appeal than the classic road trip It is as far back as the 1920s, built in our cultural DNA dating. In Jazz Age America, the car was a symbol of freedom - a chance to escape their small town and the watchful eyes of parents. It allows men and women together ever possible to sneak in a way. Since the highway system was developed in the 1950s, set off a wave of children on the streets of the country to explore, new life in America's car and road trip culture.
And any road trip more mystery and fascination continues as "the cross-country." It is the king of car trips. In 06, as part of my original around the world, I went in the United States before I went abroad. I left my home in Boston and spent nearly two months in order crosses the country, as far west as Arizona scored before turning east again, cross the Great Plains, and finish in Chicago.
get I wanted to know my country before I got to know another. But I scratched hardly the surface of what the United States is. I saw and experienced a lot - from the Rocky Mountains, the Grand Canyon, Denver, post-Katrina New Orleans, and the Great Plains - but you do not realize how big the country is until you have a 12-hour and observe nor in Texas.
This country is great, and there is still so much more I want to see them.
I decided to use it to take the publication of my new book as an opportunity, another road trip across the country. From Memphis to Montana, Yellowstone, California Wine Country, Utah, Mardi Gras, and much more, it's time, my gaze home and explore again my own backyard
I have very long road ahead of me .:
I have a number of objectives for this trip:
- Learn how on the cheap the United States to travel . I have a number of questions in my mind: how to get around easily and cheaply? What you do for accommodation in a country known for hostels? What are the best routes? How to find free parking? There is so much I want to find out.
- Now more content on the United States . Most of the US content on my site goes on that first trip in 06. At that time I did not look a write eye on travel. It involves a lot of US content will come on the blog now!
- many national parks hike . I'll finally Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier National Park and Monument Valley, and see to visit the giant redwood trees!
- as many kitschy roadside attractions as possible (ie visiting world's largest ball of twine).
- Most importantly, better understand the people in my country . I am a deeply political person, and I want to know if the country as a political media makes it is divided to be. Are we really so far apart or do blowhard experts make it seem so?
Over the next few months you posts about cities, national parks and regions in the United States are going to see. I do not have international travel plans by June. (The general tips, ideas and advice articles will still occur with the same frequency, but!)
I remember the long, long journeys through the States in 06, so this time I am me to have friends (and readers) get on the way. If someone wants to join for part of the journey, I am open to travel on the road have friends. Just send me an email ( [email protected] ) and we will try to work something.
For me travel is to visit more than a distant exotic destination. It is to explore the unknown. It is to see new places and come to a new understanding of how the world works. Sometimes that means across an ocean, fly and explore a new country. Other times, it simply means to get in your car and drive to explore your own country and learn to appreciate where you come from.
