See something different and visit the Stone Carving Hermit of Nicaragua
Nicaragua is a place which attracts visitors with its surf, beaches, hiking, volcanoes and delicious food. You'll never do it, be short of something. But if you are looking for something else and sympathetic, north to Esteli and looking from Alberto GutiƩrrez, the stone-carving town hermit.
It is not easy to achieve, but it is well worth the hike.
I was lucky. A friend of mine joined me with a local named Rodney McDonald, teaching communities a large program running on fire safety and EMS. (Tragically, it is not very common in Central America.) Rodney'd show around the area to see me under Alberto.
"Not many people get to see it. Most do not even know about it. If you want to break up your walking, typical sights and drink, we will go in the morning." Rodney told me.
I was fascinated.
How could I say no to that?
Alberto something of a local character, and for almost 30 years figures and images was in the rocks to carve around his house. While he is not a hidden secret (I wish I could say that I was the first to visit this amazing man) obtained, it is because too heavy, not many people really try to visit him. (Do a quick Google search and you will find very little information about Alberto.)
And so, the next morning, Rodney, one of his employees (her translate the video to hear), and I got guided in his pickup tuck and out of town. We drove to the border, in rural Nicaragua, where the houses trees and small street stalls was. "This is definitely out of the way," I thought.
We suddenly turned onto a dirt road. There was nothing but rolling green hills and farms. No sign of our way. The road seemed as random as the adventure. We arrived horses and a few houses on this bumpy, windy dirt road, until finally we stopped. To our left was a walk through a courtyard of strangers.
"We will head down there to Alberto House" Rodney told me.
We moved down the hill, take time to marvel at the beautiful scenery before a small cow path through the woods to be further down, finally coming to what seemed the only house for miles.
a woman came out, greeted us and led us behind the house, where a sun-drenched, unkempt man came with an ear to ear smile to greet us from. It was Alberto - and immediately he started us stories from the local forests to tell, plants, and its carvings, all summarized in this week Video:
the day we spent Alberto visit to hear his story, to see his carvings, and wander in Nicaragua to this remote area was one of the most surprising and pleasant days that I had during my visit. If you find yourself in Nicaragua and want to see the most comfortable and interesting man in the country, visit with your head to Esteli and Alberto.
Tell him I say hello.
Directions Check is a complicated bit. to visit Alberto GutiƩrrez, take a bus or taxi to Tisey Estanzuela Natural Reserve. Questions are sold at the entrance to El Calejate or Eco Posada. When placed on the Eco Posada (where you can get lunch, get a drink, etc.), keep walking up the road and eventually you will be a large clearing on the left side are a well worn road goes down slightly the hills. It will be a sign that says "El Calejate." This is the path to go down, admire the stunning views, and then down the hill, classify the footpath to the left. Keep walking and you will see a sign that says "Bienvenidos a Galeria Esculturas en Piedras". Cross to call the wooden gate and start. Alberto comes out to greet you.
