Hanging Out in Oxford

Hanging Out in Oxford -

Oxford, founded sometime in the ninth century, expanded as a center for learning first for theology in the Middle Ages, then medicine and then law. Over the centuries, the university has added more departments, and now you can study with the best and brightest in every field.

The small town of Oxford basically a giant school. Every few meters, a new college springs on you. The towers, old buildings and courtyards make Oxford by a nice place to stroll. I spent three days there by someone from couchsurfing host. As my previous experience couchsurfing, this was made a lot of fun and the host was very hospitable. It is home to a new person every week and loves the experience. In a "small world now," one of his friends next week moved back to Thailand, and she lives right down the street from where I live.

Oxford was nice, although I rains every day was there. I explored the area during small gaps in the storms, but since this is England, the rain quickly back and I turned in quickly. though not always home. Often I went into the universities to explore shops and museums

While I often do not open for tours, I decided to do so here, and it was worth the price. They tell you a lot about the University that you might not otherwise learn. The Oxford system is unique. The university consists of 38 colleges and each university is separate and responsible for themselves. Everyone has their own hiring and firing, and for admission. The "University" is an umbrella organization run by the government, handing out the grades. While you can go to New College and Exeter College, Oxford You receive an additional degree. There are no departments as well as at other universities around the world. Here every university teaches all subjects, although it is a science and medicine department. In graduate school Curriculums are specialized.

If you apply to Oxford, to apply to a college. Each university takes its own candidate, and since they all teach the same thing, a lot of it is a crap shoot and based on reputation.

Each week students meet with a tutor who helps with their studies. These tutorials are the foundation of the Oxford system and the main part of a student's work.

Another interesting fact about the Oxford system, it does not checks. In most universities, if the term is finished, take a final exam. In Oxford, you may have little test here and there, but there is no real semester final. Your degree rests on a final exam you have in Oxford at the end of your time. A test. ? Sick, huh

thought I was all Oxford system too complex, but this is the result of people who start their own universities each year for many centuries, and then do not want to integrate into a system.

Because of the weather, I did not get the chance in the river in Oxford punting to go. Punting is when. A kind of gondola on the river go down while drinking, relaxing, and hoping that you do not fall in when it's your turn, that the poles to push (Punt) Disappointing.

Oxford is an hour from London and ensures a good night trip out of town, or if you do not mind a bit rushed, a day trip. There is a lot of history here, and if you're a Harry Potter fan, where the College Hogwarts was filmed, is also here. It's history, educational and cool architecture in this city.

And if you go, make sure you go punting for me!
