My insider's guide Bangkok on a budget

My insider's guide Bangkok on a budget -

Bangkok skyline at night
It seems that everyone now goes to Thailand. I think friends about going, meet friends and friends already there. It now has all that snow and cold in the northern hemisphere to be! At the end of last year I have a considerable amount of time in the city. It is one of my favorite cities in the world.

Bangkok usually leaves travelers unimpressed considering its pollution, traffic, and lack of tourist attractions. I played tour guide a few friends when I was in town, and while they enjoyed the food and the night life, they did not think there was much to do. And they are right -. There is not much to do here in the traditional tourist sense, and most people can not get wait

I used to feel that way until I lived here and saw that Bangkok actually has a lot to offer. It only shows its secrets slowly to those with the time to explore the hidden treasures of this mega city. It requires you to leave the tourist ghetto of Khao San and Silom and do a city full of things, places to eat and bars, clubs and sites to visit.

What to see and do in Bangkok

Bangkok Royal Palace
Among my favorite places to visit and things to see:

The Grand Palace
hours: 8:30 -3: 30 pm daily. Price: 500 Baht
This is Royal Palace Thailand. It was built in the late 18th century by King Rama I and is the official residence of the current monarch (although he actually live no longer there, now it is only used for ceremonies). It is a beautiful castle with numerous temples filled, including Wat Pra Kaeo, which houses 15th century emerald Buddha statue, are their robes turned three times a year by the king himself.

The Jim Thompson House
hours: 9 am- 5:00 daily; the last tour begins at 17.00. Price: 150 baht, discounts for students
Jim Thompson was a former American spy and silk trader in Thailand in the 1950s and 1960s. He built his traditional Thai house in Bangkok and decorated with beautiful teak furniture and a garden. He mysteriously disappeared in 1967 while in Malaysia. His house is now a monument to traditional Thai architecture. A visit here is to do one of my favorite things in the city. The proceeds are used to help disadvantaged children

Wat Arun
hours :. 08:30 to 17:00 daily. Price: 50 baht
This is a beautiful Buddhist temple on the edge of the Chao Phraya River opposite the Grand Palace. It has a large tower and four small and is so iconic that you will find it in Thai money. From the top of the main spire, you get a magnificent view of the city, making for amazing shots at sunrise and sunset. The stairs are steep, so be careful

Wat Pho
hours :. From 8:00 to 18:30 every day. Price: 100 Baht
massages daily from 8.00 am to 17:00, Price: from 260 baht / hour
Wat Pho for two things famous: a larger-than-life golden reclining Buddha statue and a relaxing massage school. It is adjacent to the Grand Palace. There is also a grocery store across the street

Chatuchak Weekend Market
hours. 6:00 to 18:00 daily
The weekly market is the ideal place to buy anything and everything. This enormous market (it is really huge!) Provides to get the best seat gifts, find imitations, exchange, or eat delicious traditional food. It is open on weekends and is one of the must-dos in the city

Terminal 21
hours :. 10:00 to 22:00
This is my favorite mall is open daily in the city. It's airport issues, and each floor has a different region of the world. There is free Wi-Fi, restaurants on each floor, a cinema on the top floor, and one of the best mall food courts in the country.

Khao San Road
Khao San Road is the infamous backpacker / tourist street in Bangkok. All travel paths seem to lead and from here. But it is more than just a transit hub for travelers to other parts of Thailand and Southeast Asia heading. This is the epicenter of the backpacker life, and you are endless bars, shops, street food, international restaurants, suppliers, local people and activity, see all day and all night.

Chinatown
Chinatown is the place to eat, especially for delicious seafood at night. The area is flooded with a river of people, for the space all scramble on the small roads. Be prepared to work your way through, especially on Sampaeng Lane to push the field of long shopping street. Here you will also find a large flower market near the river.

Suk Soi 11
Sukhumvit Soi 11, a downtown street, is the expat hotspot of Bangkok and my favorite street in the city. They are (best in town) to find Cheap Charlie (my favorite bar), Roof Beam, Suk 11 Guesthouse, amazing Indian food in Moghul Room, and authentic Tex-Mex at Charley Brown.

Where to Eat

Food in Bangkok
Bangkok has some of the best Thai and international cuisine in the world, and there is nothing you do not (except Ethiopian, like the restaurant recently closed) to get. Whenever I leave Bangkok, I miss the variety of food I get in the city. Within walking distance of my apartment are delicious regional cuisine, great Mexican, good Italian, and one of my favorite sushi places. You can in this city eat like a king

My favorite markets are .:

  • Chinatown (! You can not handle all wrong in Chinatown go)
  • Small Arabia (Middle Eastern food)
  • Nang Loeng (fairly close to Democracy Monument)
  • Ramkamhaeng (opposite Ramkamhaeng University)
  • Soi Rambuttri (at the end, near the 7 - Eleven)
  • Soi Sukhumvit 33 (Amazing pad Thai, soup and noodle vendors)
  • Victory Monument

(I do not eat many Thai- restaurants, so I can list other much otherwise than the markets, but for a list of Thai restaurants in Bangkok, visit Migrationology. He knows the best places.)

after gorging on Thai- Food, you might want to get something else. Here it is all really good international food is quite expensive. Compared to back home, it is not expensive, but for the area, it is expensive. I love good food, as much as the next person, but I hate to pay much for it. So after a few years living in Bangkok, I have managed to find a few good deals. Here are some of my favorite and cheap Western restaurants:

Bella Napoli
This is my favorite Italian restaurant in Bangkok. You'll find the best pizza in town, get along with other delicious Italian specialties.

Charley Brown Mexican Cuisine
You will not find much good Mexican food in Asia, but this place comes close. Owned by an American who knows, it is very popular with expats, and they have a great happy hour on Sunday evening.

Isao
This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the world. Everything here is very good. There is a robust menu and specials change constantly. Make sure you try the winter-roll -. It is my favorite

La Monita Taqueria
This hip, new Mexican place serves strong drinks and spicy foods

[! May Kaidee vegetarian restaurant
near Khao San Road, this restaurant is an institution in Bangkok and serves the best vegetarian Thai food in the area. Try the Massaman curry and spring rolls - they are to die for. They also offer cooking classes.

Moghul Room
Bangkok many Indian restaurants, but this one is my favorite. It is opposite Cheap Charlies Bar and has North Indian cuisine. Try to make Thali how to get the best of everything.

Pizzeria Limoncello
While Bella Napoli serves the best pizza, for high-end Italian dishes come here. It is popular with expats and is a great day on the spot.

Shoshana Restaurant
If you want Shoshana traditional Middle Eastern and Israeli food, head. Their falafel is dying.

Tapas Café
They have the best Spanish tapas in the city. Their patatas bravas are delicious, and they make delicious octopus dishes.

Best Places to Drink

People out at night in Bangkok
Bangkok's nightlife is legendary. From Khao San Road Patpong the expat bars to clubs, Bangkok is a party town. The nights must never stop. In recent years there has been a growing cocktail bar and beer scene. While expensive, if you go for more than Chang beer and cheap whiskey, you can find now in town. Here are my favorite waterholes:

Apoteka
Bangkok Prohibition speakeasy-style bar serves drinks in the manner of an old pharmacy, with specials like the If you feel like "penicillin". , Well-crafted cocktails, this is the place!

Brick Bar
Although this bar on Khao San Road, one would never know it. on the back of the complex Buddy Lodge places hardly migrate all foreigners here. This is a Thai bar which plays ska and reggae music. A good place to get away from the tourists.

Cheap Charlies Bar
Cheap Charlie is an expat favorite, and you will find many locals there every night of the week. There is an outdoor bar (it used to be much cheaper!) With a few stalls and cheap drinks. There is already an integral part of the city for decades and it is my favorite bar in the world. A come here every evening (except Sundays when they close), when I'm in town.

Cloud47
Cloud47 gives you a great view of the little side streets and streets Silom. The bar is worth the visit, but skip the food.

Robin Hood
The popular English pub has plenty of seating, good imported beers and delicious food. It is primarily a local / expat watering hole and fills up quickly when football (soccer) or any sports game plays.

Route 66
Route 66 is part of the RCA Music and club area and divided into separate rooms: East of hip-hop, west of Thai live band music, and to the north and south of everything else. It is a huge place, but incredibly popular with expats and Thais (RCA generally). Few tourists come here.

The Dubliner Place
Another popular pub, this place offers regular live music, a very typical pub menu, and many sporting events on TV.

Whisgars
Love Whiskey Thai but it took years to appear (thanks in part to high taxes and import duties) for proper whiskey bars with a wide choice in the city. While there are a few new is scattered, this is one of my favorites. They have an extensive cigar and whiskey menu (although I only to the former Stick). It is the only place in the city where I have good scotch found! It's not cheap, but you do not need a lot!

Smalls
in the Silom is the city, the multi-storey bar is late is good to go at night for dancing, cheap drinks and has a nice roof!

Soi Rambuttri and Khao San Road
More an area as a specific place, but if you are a backpacker, backpackers want to see, or really mad want to get to, is this area where you go. Buckets and towers flow of beer like candy in Willy Wonka factory and it is really easy to meet people here. On weekends, it is incredibly popular with the Thai to college students. I usually start at the quiet Soi Rambuttri before moving to crazier Khao San on.

After you peel the layers, you will find a vibrant city that is more than just temples, tourists and touts. They are large international cuisine, world-class bars and clubs, a variety of activities to find great places to shop interesting neighborhoods, and much more. Coming from the Lonely Planet and track from the main areas, you will find to find a city that is much richer, vivid and dynamic than you can imagine.
