My Fernreisen romance
From the first moment when I saw in Paris, I was in love. Paris was everything I thought it would be: beautiful, sophisticated, old, neat, and relaxed. All clichés true. When I in their Installation pants, nice clothes stared at the Arc de Triomphe and then on the Champs-Elysees, fashionably dressed people and black around me moved jackets to move a tourist to dumbstruck.
I was in love.
Subsequent visits only deepens my love for the city. When I returned to lead a tour of Europe in the past month, I have extra days for the city of light. I could not bear not to have time alone with Paris it.
Paris has written about countless times and will continue to be. But that will not stop my flattery. For me Paris is -smart the best society, classy, sophisticated, and soulful. The seemingly endless history mingles with modern life. It takes the best of each and create something even better.
Paris reveals himself to accompany his palace of the same name by solitary walks through history, from the Place de la Concorde, where Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, and countless others their heads have lost, built to the Tuileries, the burned in 1871. It is the Louvre, a centuries-old royal residence turned art museum; the old Sainte-Chapelle, the home of stained glass windows from the 13th century; Notre-Dame, whose presence towers over the historic center of the city; the Jardin de Luxembourg; Montmartre; and the Eiffel Tower. The Latin Quarter with its patchwork of streets winding, the working class Parisians and artists are used at home seems always to show something new.
And when my mind is lost in history, draw me my senses back to the present. Sharply dressed Parisians do I see my drab backpack uniform of T-shirt and jeans, and think to reconsider: "I can do better." The smells from the patisseries they ask me a hater of desserts, in a lover of them. How can one deny so exquisitely glazed and decorated cakes? These visual treats are a delicious work of art. All fromage shops, bakeries and markets where you can fill in for only a few euros to make expensive Paris a budget dream gourmet. A trip to Paris is nonstop food, washed down with rich food by smooth red wine. In Paris gluttony is not an excess but rather a way of life.
Although I my home in NYC love the bustle of the city and the rush and dog-eat-dog mentality often collides with the go-with-the-flow attitude I learned from the trip.
Paris is the opposite of New York. Here stop people to appreciate the little things in life - lunch, linger over wine, two month vacation, picnic in the park, close businesses at an early hour and daily market trips. In Paris, life is a game, and every act devoted to what matters most: food, wine, friends, love and entertainment. Here lives a life and not through them race.
I idealize Paris. I know that. My romantic idea of the city, born from books and movies is amplified only by every visit. And like all long-distance love affairs, we idealize the good and shine that bad about. Daily life in Paris might not be so romantic, I believe, but we all need a little romance in our lives, and I am happy with my case.
