Have you ever are when you travel?
Go in a new hostel, hotel, city, or on a tour without anyone you know can be liberating. There is no baggage or preconceptions that follow. It's just you and who you are in the moment right now. Everyone there is a blank slate. In fact, you can fill in this slate with what story you want and be whoever you want. An astronaut, a pilot, a fireman, a princess. Most people choose simple, although to be themselves. But sometimes you wonder if they really are. Is the story they told you true? Have parts "cooler" beautify only to shine? After all, you have no reason not to believe, unless they tell you son 'they are Bill Gates. We trust the people we meet.
I never much thought given to whether people are until recently. Some travelers and I have on this subject while I was in Amsterdam, because I was as donkeys give notice to the question "What are you doing?" I hate the question, because I talk about hate "to work." It's always the same answer to "how awesome the job", and I would really only talk about something else.
My friend Leyla, a beautiful and wild irish girl remarked: "You know, you really could not tell every story people you would not know I think I'm going to tell the people that I am a princess.. am, and I have a helicopter. How would they know that I lie? "she then explained to the hostel" I'm a Princess! "
and she's right. (Not on the princess thing, however.) We can tell people what story we love. I may be Bob, a 25-year-old scientist from Texas. And maybe I am and all that Nomadic Matt stuff is fake. (It is not, although I would like 25 to be back.)
But sometimes the process of traveling is around behind the old man to leave. Travel gives us a chance, someone new to be unencumbered by the baggage back home and the past. We can reinvent ourselves. Sometimes that's a good thing. You can the person you've always wanted to be. Travel may be that push that forces us to change the parts of us have always wanted but have always an excuse not.
And when I thought about this question the last few days, I was wondering about your thoughts on this subject.
Have you ever lied or someone caught lying about who they are during the trip? Have you ever been a part (large or small) change your story? Do you think this often happens on the street?
