Jungle trekking with leeches in Khao Sok
Located in the south of Thailand, Khao Sok National Park has always kept my imagination. It is consistently rated as one of the best parks in Thailand, with amazing trekking, camping, limestone Karst, cooling flows and a beautiful lake. Since then I have been to Thailand come, I tried to Khao Sok, but the road bends mysteriously, and for one reason or the other, I have never been able to make it. to visit
But this time I have to visit my friends and as an excuse I push my job as a "tour guide" finally required at this park. And I'm glad that I - I have in Thailand to many wonderful national parks, but this is one of the best
I have three surrounded by dense jungle days, animals and cooling air .. The highlight of my trip was the day long jungle trek I took. Beginning in the late morning (09:30), met my friends and I, our guide, bought our park tickets, and drove to the other end of the park. Instead doubling back on the main path, we would another track, hiking explore to see some huge flowers, eat the head to a waterfall, lunch and then to the main park entrance on foot 400 meters.
Everything seemed simple enough. I saw a well-worn path and a slightly strenuous day hike. We did 11 km in the jungle, so it would go no cake, but I had no idea that this hike a challenge would be much, especially since the latter half was the park's main street.
I was wrong.
Completely wrong.
This hike was stressful, challenging, leech-infested, and all at once exhilarating.
It began simply enough - emigrated we visit 400 meter giant parasitic flowers that fasten to the vine, then feed off the life to grow out of them. After nine months, flourish, spray their seeds throughout the jungle, and die within four days. But while in bloom, the flowers are a sight to see.
The hike to the top was not very hard. The path was well worn and had amazing views to see the surrounding jungle, and I have a welding break much. On the way up, we saw a group of gibbons make their way through the treetops. Gibbons in Khao Sok are rarely seen, so it was quite amazing, especially since I love monkeys, although they moved to be too fast, photographed. When I clicked my camera, they had moved on, so take a picture instead of fruitlessly, I saw them just in all their glory.
When we arrived up, our guide told us, we would wander down to the waterfall. I assumed he meant we would another track heading down.
Once again, I was wrong.
Our path was at the top of the waterfall and our guide saw us opened. "OK, we have lunch, but first we have to get off. It will not be a problem. We have ropes, and I'll go first."
My friends and I saw another hesitantly. To be on the base of the waterfall, were we have our inner Indiana Jones to embrace abseiling page. As you may know, heights make extremely uncomfortable me, and I decided to go last, as I worked up the courage never look down.
But we do not too many steep drop offs has encounter, and soon I was rivaled the path to leadership. We would rappel ropes. If no cable was to lead us, we scaled the rocky sides of the waterfall, cling to the vine, as we made the trip down to the bottom.
But the waterfall, it was not the worst. After lunch, we had to migrate downstream, after the river, which is pretty simple sounds. along a riverbed Hiking is not a challenge, but not here usually. There was no trace or easy way. Sometimes we had to go to big, wet rocks, climb the narrow causeway, or vines shrink again when the river was impassable.
And the leeches only made it worse. When I went from Khao Sok, I had taken seven leeches from my legs, and a few even found their way onto my arms. Fortunately, unlike the leeches in northern Thailand, most of these leeches were small and easy to grab from. Unfortunately, my friend has noted that no one until the end, which until then had much enlarged so, he left a scar on his foot.
After the flow and subsequent leeches Distance (Cue The Life Aquatic jokes), we were on the home straight - it was now a simple walk through a bamboo forest back to the park entrance. out of the park on the way we have been given leave of another troop monkeys. These were not gibbons (I forget their real names), but they jumped around for a while, playing in the trees, and gave us a last exciting thing to remember.
When it was all said and done, walk had lasted a little more than eight hours everything. Back to my hotel, I took the hottest shower of my life, scrubbed myself clean, and fell on my bed.
Although tiring, this jungle trek was the most exciting in my recent memory. I left Khao Sok with a sense of rawness. Here the lack of human and Trails is let you feel as if you explore the jungle for the first time. I love the moments in which you are traveling, you. Feel as if they have unearthed a hidden gem As if you had found somewhere or some place forgotten by the people long. That can not be the case, but the sense of wonder, adventure and exploration are what drive me on my travels.
And in Khao Sok, it was just me, the jungle, and the sense of adventure.
But I could have done without the leeches.
