Saturday Location: Copenhagen
The City of Copenhagen has a long and rich history. It was the center of the Danish Empire for hundreds of years, and as such, it is home to many palaces, historic buildings and cultural monuments. But modern Copenhagen is not steeped in a city of the past - it is looking forward to the future. The classic architecture and channels are compared by a modern infrastructure, new buildings and a surprising amount of windmills.
I've been twice to Copenhagen. The first time was just a visit on the way from Sweden to Germany. The second was the city to learn more deeply with some very close friends of mine that I had not seen in years. I walked away from that experience, to love the city even more than I do. After the first time
Then again, it's hard not to fall filled with such a clean, beautiful city with historical sites and friendly people in love. (Too bad that it is not better food. But not everywhere Italy)
The thing I liked best about this trip was that I finally got to explore the city in a lot more depth. I did not really have a chance, that the last time to do, because of the limited time and very, very poor planning. I was not to let that happen to go again, and after a week in the city, I went has gone many to have seen must-sees Copenhagen to offer:
Christiania - This hippie -Enklave has been located around since the 1970s. During this time, peace-loving hippies an abandoned military base and commune took to set up there. Over the years it has become a drug haven, with people coming the weeds to hang out and smoke that are very, very open sold here. In recent years, the government has cracked in the area and has a number of rights victories won against them. They are in talks to try to save it, but it can not be long. If weed is not your thing, come anyway for cold beer gardens, people watching, and the murals
boat tour -. The canals and the harbor of Copenhagen are very scenic, and much cleaner than that of Amsterdam. (You can actually see the bottom of the Copenhagen Canal.) Take the hour-long boat tour here to learn a bit more about the city. Leave the big boats from Nyhavn, and while you surprisingly find much locals on them to drink 'touristy' a beer on a sunny day.
Tivoli - Tivoli is an amusement park in the city center. It is not cheap to visit, and the ride tickets cost extra. But this is a popular place for families and children during the school holidays. While it may not be the most popular place for daily travelers, I had a great time here, playing mainly Autoskooter with my friends.
The Morning Bar - There are actually more than a morning bar in Copenhagen. "Morning Bar" is a term for the late, late (early morning) bars which open right behind the club. The Danes love to drink and tend to stay until about 09:00 during these bars outside The most famous is Louise
Nightlife -. Copenhagen has a variety of bars, lounges and clubs. This city does not start until about 1:00 pumps and goes very late (up morning see Bars). I would try to spend at least one night.
Christian's Palace Ruins - Among palace in the center of town, one can see the ruins of Bishop Absalon fortress, which dates back to 1167, it is. dark and damp down there, it is a very feel-like crypt and old. I was really impressed by the details of the fortress and the path to the current palace
Round Tower -. Rundetaarn is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe. And by a long, tiring walk to the top, offering spectacular views of the old town of Copenhagen
Church of Our Saviour -. Near Christiania, this church is worth seeing for its giant spiral bell tower. The interior is simple and has a couple of interesting pictures, but the headframe is what it's worth. , It has always been somewhat of a manhood test to climb and touch the globe at the summit, was nearly 100 meters high viewed in the air
Hans Christian Anderson Museum - While this is " made for kids "really and has Disney-like displays and sets, I liked this museum. Inside you get to read all of Anderson's children's stories that were much shorter and darker than I had thought. It was quite an eye-opener. Disney lied to me all these years
Museum -. The National Historical Museum has many exhibits on Danish history and Viking weapons. (Skip the Museum of Copenhagen, even though it was terrible and do not convey .. much)
Danish National Gallery - The Danish National Gallery (free entry) has great art from the likes of Rembrandt , Picasso and Matisse. There are also a number of paintings by Danish artists from the
Little Mermaid "Golden Age". - It may be small, but this statue makes for some great pictures. And since it is close to a park, which is worth a visit very much, there is no reason, not over his head and a photo snap. Watch out for the hordes of tourists trying to get in your shot, although
Kastellet Park -. Kastellet used to be a fortress guarding the city, but is now a public park, a cultural and historical monument, and is also used for military purposes. The park has large gardens, trees and ponds. It's right near the Little Mermaid statue and is a wonderful place to relax on a warm day.
, keep in mind that Copenhagen is not a cheap city. The strong crown makes it a very expensive experience for travelers. Luckily I stayed with friends for most of the time. But if I did not, I paid $ 30 USD for a 24-bed dormitory !!!! That was one of the cheap hostels in the city also. I can not imagine how much a hotel would actually cost me. Regarding to save on money, I found buying drinks at the supermarket helped as well to the hot dog and sausage seller ($ 3 USD filled for a large spice and Extras Hotdog) to eat. Attraction example, I suggest you really the Copenhagen city map. As in Oslo and Stockholm sights in Copenhagen can really add up. The cost of the card is only 249 Kroner for the 24-hour card and 479 for the 72-hour card. (A great bargain, since most museums are 70 Kroner to get in and free travel.)
While I enjoyed Copenhagen my first time, I grew up there definitely loving my second. I have seen much more of the city, and spending time with my friends showed me a bit of the local life and culture, also.
Copenhagen is a beautiful, fun city that I will definitely be back. In fact, my love of Norway and Sweden, where, I think I should just move to Scandinavia and get it over with. I can not stay away from the place seem away
Editor's Note :. The city of Copenhagen gave me a 72 Visit Copenhagen card that I used to see the sights that I missed from my 09 visit
