The Saturday City: Beautiful mountains
The conversation usually starts like this:
"You go to Norway"
"Yes, for a few weeks."
"You have to go to Bergen. It's just amazing."
No matter who I mentioned my trip to Norway, they would be considered to see about seeing mountains with so much excitement, speak, the beautiful Norwegian fjords. I did not know what to expect from mountains, but since everybody seemed to praise, my expectations for outstanding achievements were quite high.
And when I left the station and went to my hotel, I could see immediately why :. Bergen is beautifully
, a compact city, nestled between two mountains, Bergen center is filled with historic brick and wooden houses, winding cobbled streets, a huge central park, gothic churches and small squares. In the harbor there is a fish market where you have to eat some of the best fishing in the country.
Unfortunately, I had only two days in Bergen. With so much to do in town, I barely had a chance to explore the local area and the beautiful fjords outside the city. However, I managed two days to fill my with some fantastic sights in Bergen. My top highlights were:
The fish market - Bergen fish market is a culinary delight. Located right in the center on the quay, it is easy to visit. There are vendors there all day, if you can find more in the morning. Norwegian relations is the fish cheap, but it's still expensive if you convert in USD. Take advantage of the provider, although that give more than happy free samples, if you just want a taste. Make sure you try the salmon and caviar. (However, I would skip the herring caviar It was not so good very, very salty ...)
Bryggen - Bryggen ( "Kai" in Norwegian ) is one of the oldest parts of Bergen and consists of beautiful 14th century Hanseatic building, including some of the few remaining wooden structures here. There are a lot of narrow streets and paths to wander. Most buildings here are tacky tourist shops but much of the wood is original and it is pretty amazing to look at. There is also a museum, which tell about the life of the 14th century merchants
Rosenkrantz Tower -. At the port in the fortress is the tower dates from the 1270s. The tower was extended several times, extended to the maintenance under Erik Rosenkrantz, who was governor during the 1500s. The current exhibition is really well done, and the top floor has a lot of history about the castle and King Hakon. You can sit outside on the top floor for a good view go to the city
Hakon Hall -. This royal residence and banqueting hall was built by King Håkon Håkonsson sometime between 1247 and 1261. It is located in the same fortress as Rosenkrantz Tower, and really no more except on special occasions. Most of the building was destroyed in World War II, but the original walls are still standing. It is amazing to consider
Bergenhus Fortress Museum -. The Fortress Museum is not a museum of the fortress. Instead tended its exhibits to the Nazis about women in Norway and in the mountains to concentrate resistance. The women show could be good, but it's all in Norway, so I do not know. But the resistance of the Nazis exhibition was in English, highly detailed, and contains many pictures. The history buff in me was excited. I learned a lot
Art Museums -. Near the park downtown (also is amazing), there are three museums worth a visit if you are in modern and contemporary art. The museums are small and will not blow your mind. However, they contain art by famous Norwegians and obliquely toward modern art
Old Bergen Museum -. This is an open air museum with more than 40 wooden houses representing Bergen architecture during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The area is open all year round and free to attend. However, the guides are not. It is not in the city center, but an easy bus ride away
Fløibanen -. Fløibanen is a train that will take you on a mountain near the city center where you can find great sweeping views of the city, the harbor and fjords. There is a restaurant on the top here to eat, but it is not cheap. But I spent a lot of time just above the city and fjords admire.
Because I had two days only in Bergen, I got to see much of the surrounding fjord landscape. However, if you spend a few extra days here, I'd recommend trips to the mountains, book a boat trip on the fjord to take, or to visit some of the old historic mansions in the countryside.
A word warning: Bergen is also famous get 270 days of rain per year, and not one of the 0 days of sun occurred while I was there. But even through the rain and clouds, I was really excited by mountains. I tried the "Bergen is so amazing," moving train jump to resist, but with a city so nice, it was hard to do. Bergen is a fun town with lots of history and good food. Try as I might, I have fallen in with the "mountains is awesome" amount. I think that, in addition to Stockholm, Bergen my favorite Scandinavian city. And that says a lot
Editor's note : .. Tourism Norway gave me free accommodation and a tourist map in attractions to get free, while I was there
