A day Valborg Bonfire

A day Valborg Bonfire -

While I was in Sweden, I got Valborg day to experience welcome the traditional Swedish spring. On this day occurs on April 30 and is a time of celebration, food, music, friends, nature and huge bonfires. In fact, it seems for most Swedes throughout the day a giant excuse to drink a huge fire and light. In ancient times the fire were used to scare robbers before the farm animals were let out at the beginning of spring to graze. Now the day has become a holiday where Sweden, long on the nature and the changing seasons, celebrate the end of winter with a big party.

Most towns have festivals with traditional music, dancing and a bonfire. Many Swedes head to the country with their friends and party to celebrate. Many celebrations often start with friends in a park with a breakfast with champagne and strawberries. The biggest festival is held in the university town of Uppsala. More than 100,000 people come to celebrate Valborg in this city. Uppsala also offers students rafting on Fyrisån through the city center with homemade, theme decorated rafts that break a rule by the end of the race and collapse. Needless to say, this is a huge festival, and especially good for those who make the party.

I have not been to Uppsala. I went to the more traditional Valborg celebration at Skansen. Skansen is an area in Stockholm with a traditional village, zoo, gardens and trails. While Valborg have them traditional dances, music, suppliers and, of course, a big bonfire. I enjoyed the music and dancing, although I did not understand what they were saying. Before the fire is lit, it was a very long speech about the next spring, the history of the holiday, and as the fire demons helps chase. The Swedes seemed as boring as I was, and when the fire began lighting the crowd erupted with joy. Finally the fire was pretty amazing:

The music is a Swedish folk song from Yvonne Roome. If you want to see more of my travel videos, check my Youtube page.
