Large festivals in the world
festivals. A place where people have a good time, can dance to great music, listen, celebrate, party, have fun and relax. They happen all over the world for many different reasons. Some celebrate religion, something in the new year, some art, some of the crop, whatever the reason, every month, somewhere in the world, you find people on a site descending to celebrate a common experience and share. If you do not like crowds, they are probably not for you. But if you feel how wet, dirty, stay up late, dancing, or just want to enjoy the power of tens of thousands of people, you look at some of these festivals from:
Carnival (February )
Carnival is a big party in front of the Christian holiday of Lent instead. Brazilian Carnival is the most famous and attracts the most number of people on it, with her dance, parades and floats, music and drinking. Vegas Sin City may be, but this is the sin holiday. Alternatively, if you are not to Brazil to bottom, you can always go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
Holi (March)
Holi a Hindu holiday celebrated after the full moon day in early March and glorifies good harvest and fertility of the land. Moreover Holi also celebrates the triumph of good over evil, are involved, at least according to legend, the god Krishna. It may take up to 16 days, depending on where in the world you are celebrating. There is music, food, and, of course, throw paint on eachother.
Songkran (mid-April)
Thai New Year is one of the most fun events I've ever been. For three days, the country basically includes party down. Songkran 3 Days water fight that engulfs the whole country, you can not go to 2 seconds off the house, without getting wet. Nobody is safe. The young and the old take in the same way, and there is nothing like a little old lady who unfortunately say, and then throw a bucket of cold water on you. The fun I've ever had in a Tuk Tuk has horse riding and a mobile water fight with people in the track above.
Bay to Breakers (May)
The Bay to Breakers is an annual footrace that, on the third Sunday takes place in San Francisco, California in May. The complete course is 7.46 miles long. The race is more of an excuse to drink and dress in strange costumes along the way. It is a very big event and is more like a moving party as a race. Also expect a lot of people to see, in the running naked.
Glastonbury (June)
Every summer in June, Pilton, England is the stage for the world one of the biggest music festivals. Glastonbury is best known for its contemporary music, but also features dance, comedy, theater, circus, cabaret and many other arts. About 175,000 people come to this area for a few days of music, mud and chaos. The fields are transformed into giant tent cities like all camp out looking to have some fun!
Swedish Midsummer (June)
During the summer solstice, Sweden come and celebrate the beginning of summer. It is not often warm up so far north, so when she does, the people will love to party. Local Sweden out into nature, dancing around a pole, eat a lot of fish, drink a lot of beer, and stay up to the longest day of the year to enjoy. After all, the sun does not set until midnight. (The Sweden also a good festival Spring to celebrate.)
Running of the Bulls (July)
In July Pamplona is dressed in white filled and a red scarf people wear who are trying their thirst with sangria and the daring few silent, out run some nasty bulls. It is usually violating a prescription for one or two people and do something that I would ever consider, but the atmosphere and celebrations are not to be overlooked. At the end of the day, your white shirt will soon be red sangria.
La Tomatina (August)
For an hour 20,000 people are engaged in a tomato fight in Bunol, Spain during the last Wednesday of August. The whistle blows and the tomatoes La Tomatina fly. It's fun, it's dirty, it's the food fight that we all dreamed of as a child. Once you have your fill of tomatoes, go wash in the river and then come the dance party in the city where the sangria and food flow.
Burning Man (August)
At the end of August, tens of thousands of people for 6 days of alternative living in the Nevada desert to head out. Burning Man brings the arty from that alternative, and the eccentric. It is open 6 days camping (bring plenty of water!), Art and music. At the end of a giant wooden man is set on fire (hence the name).
Oktoberfest (September)
Although really in September this two weeks Beer Festival in Munich draws people from all over the world with their beer halls, lederhosen, giant pitchers of beer and giant pretzels. Nobody I know ever lasted the whole two weeks, but the 3 or 4 days are to be the haziest your life. It is the best place in the world to celebrate one of God's greatest gifts beer.
Day of the Dead (November)
carnavelesque With paper mache skeletons and candy skulls Mexican Day of the Dead is one of the most famous festivals in the world. Participants devote a day to clean their family graves, decorating it with candles and flowers, picnics and dancing to mariachi bands. It is an odd mix of remembrance and celebration.
All over the world and no matter what month of the year, you will find people celebrating. I've been a large number of these festivals and my goal is to see them all. Not only are fun festivals are also a good way to do something different than the normal tour of what we do when we visit places.
