The Saturday City: Amsterdam

The Saturday City: Amsterdam -

Amsterdam canals in the netherlands The capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is famous for its cafes, red lights, and channels. But it is much more than the offers.

founded in 1275 and allegedly by two fishermen and their dog, Amsterdam was the seat of the House of Orange, the royal family, which still rules the country today. Over the centuries the city began transferring wealth to the city decorated grew in importance and wealth as Dutch colonies around the world, and companies such as the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Amsterdam was the center of trade and as the prosperity of the VOC grew, so did the fortunes of the city. The city was also open an important financial center, the first stock market in the late 17th century for tulips!

My first trip to Amsterdam was in 06. I was there to relax after my trip through Europe. I had seen a break enough churches and needs. While relaxing in the city, I realized it was much, much more to Amsterdam than I thought.

Most people only stay a few days in Amsterdam, experience the main attractions, a café and a canal trip. Within a few days I realized, this is a place was that I was offered a lot more than that.

Six weeks have still there. I had fallen in love. The city, the locals, the atmosphere - everything was there. Amsterdam was more than red lights, smoke and channels.

I just came back from there, and the city is as beautiful as ever.

Optical Amsterdam is stunning. Tiny cobbled streets are lined with old brick buildings. The separation of these streets are tree-lined canals that cut through the city in slices. Walking around the streets as. Their way through the city in a zigzag, you feel as if you have at the next corner again in 1700 and went somewhere, you are members of the Dutch East India Company

to be addition to a visual wonder Amsterdam also offers a variety of activities. The Dutch love with the bike. The streets, the city, the country - they are all cycled meant. a bike and see the town the way of rent is a great workout and a great way to get out of the tourist center and to see the suburbs as Jordaan and Oost, visit where the locals live.

If museums are your thing, the city is flooded with them. It is the Van Gogh Museum, where you can watch hundreds of Van Gogh paintings - including the famous sunflowers - and paintings by other Impressionist painters. Then there are the Rijksmuseum where you can see Rembrandt's famous Nightwatch painting. (You can also watch Rembrandt House.) There are the Amsterdam History Museum, the Sex Museum, the Hemp Museum and the Museum of Jewish History. In Amsterdam, whatever you feel like it, there is probably a museum for them.

Then there are Vondelpark, the huge park in the southern part of the city. In summer, the Dutch come out of hiding and populate the park for a picnic or football game or just some relaxation. Vondelpark too busy? Well, there are a whole host of other great parks spread through the city, also. You will find what you are looking for.

In addition to culture and beauty, there is also the well-deserved reputation of Amsterdam a party city. If all you want to do is to visit coffee shops, party, and see the red lights, the city has the well. The city has a vibrant and clubbing thanks in part to loving locals and ambitious young tourists.
