The Saturday City: Girona

The Saturday City: Girona -

the streets of girona in costa brava, spain I had the pleasure of visiting Girona, the Costa Brava region of Spain north of Barcelona, as it acted as host city for this European trip Blogger year's conference.

This region of Spain is not as popular as the Costa del Sol or islands such as Ibiza, which is good and bad. Good, because there is not so many tourists here and it is relatively quiet. Bad, because this region is beautiful, picturesque and filled with beautiful coasts, I wish they did advertise more I should have visited earlier. I can not believe I have six years to Spain were coming and never made it here! Costa Brava, one of my favorite places in Spain and Girona are one of my favorite cities.

The city of Girona has been inhabited since pre-Roman times. After the Roman Empire collapsed, the city of an endless stream of kings and princes ruled over the centuries. Girona has undergone 25 sieges and been captured seven times in history.

One of the most famous of these sieges in May 1809 began when the city was besieged by 35,000 French Napoleonic troops, to disease and hunger forced them to surrender that December. I've actually seen a reenactment of one of the battles of the siege, while I was there. It was seen a pretty spectacle, all dressed, and in contrast to adjustments in the United States, you have "on the battlefield" with all others. swirled tons of people with the reenactors and took photos on the field. It also meant that the cannons and guns came scarily close to me.

The present Girona is filled with plenty of food, cheap bars, and winding cobbled streets I hours lost in during my wonderful stay could spend here I found to enjoy a range of activities.

current housesit in the wilderness of Wisconsin

ice at Rocambolesc - the three Roca brothers considered in some of the top chefs world and run the world's second best restaurant (see further down this list). In Girona, Jordi Roca, the youngest brother, this ice cream is running with a sort of Willy Wonka decor. You can enjoy interesting flavors, different sorbets, which can be topped with berries, cotton candy, popping candy, fruit, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, fudge, and so much more. I was there two days in a row, and I regret not going

monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes -. One of the oldest in Europe, this large monastery outside the city but easy to reach by bus or car. The church is a great example of Romanesque architecture

The Cathedral of Girona -. A spectacular cathedral contains the interior of the widest Gothic nave in the world and the second largest overall after St. Peter's in the Vatican. The construction was begun in the 11th century and was only completed in the 18th century. It is located right in the city center. While it is not as amazing as the Sant Pere is, if you do not make it there, visit this cathedral

colorful houses in girona

Walk the wall - , used Girona meant keeping unfriendly armies be surrounded by a huge medieval wall. This wall was destroyed centuries ago, but you can to run a reconstructed version, which surrounds the historic center of the city, and all major points of interest, see

The Museum of the History of -. Are you a history buff? Good me too! I try every story Museum I come across to visit. Finally, do not know where the people are, if you do not know where they've been to. Girona History Museum does explain a good job, the city complex and often turbulent history

dali painting in girona, spain

day trip to Figueres to see Dali -. A short trip from Girona (about an hour by train) is the Dalí Museum in Figueres. Dalí is an important figure in this region, to be born in Figueres, although he lived in the seaside town of Cadaques most of his life (you can visit the house). Some of Dali's most famous surrealist art and statues in the Figueres museum. Be ready prepared for the masses; sometimes, at some of the best known works move at a snail's pace to see -. it always hours here Rush

The Jewish Quarter - The 12th century saw the birth of a thriving Jewish community, which was ended when the Jews from Spain were sold in the year 1492nd Today the Jewish Quarter is one of the best preserved historical sites in Europe, with centuries-old houses and facades still in wonderful condition. There is also a museum to visit, although I do not make it there. This author, however, and had some interesting comments

girona, spain

El Celler de Can Roca -. if you spend the money owned by the famous Roca brothers and as the second best in the world, a meal here costs mucho dinero (a lot of money), but why not eat in one of the best restaurants in the world ? The brothers made our Blogger Conference (crazy, right?) And the food divine. I am sure that the restaurant as mouth watering is

gorge on the food -. OK, this activity is not limited to this city. Food is one of the biggest attractions in all of Spain, but in Girona, food is really an art form. I went overboard on the tapas, ham and ice. For tapas visits Txalaka.

Girona offers a place without experiencing the Catalonia region, the hordes near Barcelona. It also makes for a good gateway city in the region of Costa Brava, with its villages, famous coastline and access to the Pyrenees.
