What it is like taking an overnight train in Europe?

What it is like taking an overnight train in Europe? -

Earlier this week I spoke about European train passes and whether they were worth the money. As part of its train series, in this video of the week, I mark my overnight train from Madrid to Paris, a long 12-hour trip on an old Renfe (Spanish) train. (Quick Note Renfe: update your trains)

Here is the journey:

While I had a good time and the ride was comfortable (and the food surprisingly good), as I said on Monday in the mail, I do not find overnight trains be good value connected to their high cost. If you are traveling through Europe and want to save money on accommodation, a second-class seat it will be cheaper than a hostel or hotel. But you avoid the crowds; they are too expensive.

Unless you are a train enthusiast, I would save my money, take a cheap flight, and avoid 12 hours driving. Unlike the famous Ghan in Australia or the VIA Rail in Canada, I find nothing special or unique about the night trains in Europe (I have three taken).

Editor's note / disclosure : This post is the first of a series of blogs, videos and freebies around rail travel in Europe. As mentioned at the beginning of the post, gave me my Rail Europe Pass for free and also paid the reservation fee. Rail Europe has a website partner since 09.
