Hiking the Tongariro Crossing

Hiking the Tongariro Crossing -

The Tongariro Crossing is considered the best day hike in New Zealand. It is a 19.4km walk that takes you through the area where they turned Mordor in Lord of the Rings. It is usually easy to walk, although there are a few places where the ascent and descent is quite steep. Moreover, if you take the time to fit it in, you can Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom) or Mount Tongariro hiking. I had a nice day, when I went. Take a look:

Tips for Walking the Tongariro Crossing

  • buses take you from the city at 06.30 am and start again from the Tongariro at 3 o'clock to come and cost $ 50 NZD.
  • , take plenty of water. There are no places to get water until closer to the end and there is no shade from the sun. You will use a lot of water on the trek.
  • take an umbrella. There is no coverage until the end of the route and the weather changes frequently.
  • plan accordingly your time. Keep the buses, running at 4:30 am, and if you plan to hike to Mount Ngauruhoe or Mt Tongariro, then you need to accelerate your pace.
  • Go quickly to Mount Ngauruhoe. This is nothing to see with really the first third of the hike. Check gives you fast more time to the crater and take the side paths.
  • You do not need hiking boots to see, to do this walk. I have it. Sneakers (running shoes) and was fine However flips flops are probably given a bad idea, the steep climbs and loose stones.
