The Saturday City: Bristol -

One of the great things is carried out via a travel site that you get other people to meet. While in England this summer I got to explore with Heather available the English city of Bristol.

around England, I would my route through the country and the people go universally "Bristol would explain? There is not much there." Needless to say, I had low expectations.

I'm not sure what people Bristol also based, however, because I found a hip college town with amazing restaurants, great ethnic food, to see wonderful things, and big parks to relax.

Bristol is like the English version of Seattle. use Most travelers seem as a base for trips to the bathroom, and never fully explore this city, it is to give a quick look before going back to London. This is a mistake.

With a population of around 400,000, Bristol is the largest city in southern England to London and the largest cargo port in England. He received a royal charter in 1155 and until the rise of Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester during the Industrial Revolution, was one of the largest cities in England. Bristol suffered extensive bombing during World War II and a subsequent sharp decline in the manufacturing industry.

The port of Bristol in the Middle Ages grew due to its location near the rivers Avon and Frome. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, this area was turned into the enclosed Floating Harbour by the construction of locks. With the advent of larger ships, though, the Avon Gorge became too much of a liability, and commercial shipping moved downstream to modern docks in Avonmouth and Portbury.

The city is no longer an industrial center, but a lively university town. The University of Bristol dominates the city, and the students have a variety of income and jobs for the community.

to spend the day, running around, I found the city quite easy to navigate. Almost everything was from somewhere within walking distance. And if it was not, the city has an easy-to-use bus system that you can take anywhere you need to go.

The port area has a nice collection of restaurants and art galleries. It has been renovated in recent years and has become a local hot spot. It is a very fashionable area, and you could see the renovation was not completed. More condos were built, more restaurants to rise, more galleries in the works. I suspect that this will be a very upscale in the coming years.

What I really enjoyed most about Bristol parks were all. Bristol is filled with great parks. I particularly liked Castle Park. Castle Park is located near the river's edge and has a bombed church from the Second World War. The church was left in ruins as a monument to the destruction of the war. Around the church are beautiful gardens and lawns, where the locals gather for lunch. I sat there at lunchtime and watched the park fill with office workers enjoying the fresh air, while they ate. It was a great place to people watch.

The most important natural attraction in Bristol is the Avon Gorge, which has the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Built in the 19th century, this bridge is free to go on and offers excellent views of the surrounding countryside. There is also an observation tower next to it. Next door are the Clifton Downs. The Downs are just a large open space. During the summer months, people are out there to play sports, to soak up some sun, picnicking with their loved ones or napping straight. The Downs offer views of the gorge and the suspension bridge. Best of all :. The Downs to the west, for outstanding sunsets make

I thought Bristol, made with its old industrial-turned-bohemian charm, for a great place to spend a few days. There was to visit historic homes, some good museums and some beautiful parks. Its image as an industrial location still lingers in most of England, it is a place few or you want to explore. But that works out for the rest of us. While all the other heads off to Bath, we can have the city of Bristol to ourselves.

I suspect one day, the word is out, but at least for now, Bristol remains a hidden gem and a city that is worth a visit.
