Why I Hate L.A.?
We all have preconceived notions and perceptions of different locations. We all have our own prejudices and opinions are based on what we read in the last few years and heard. Stories from the news, the Internet and our friends provide an image in our minds. As long as I can remember, I have always had preconceptions about Los Angeles. I thought it would be contaminated, a huge jam-filled city with vain wannabe celebrities. Los Angeles was a sprawling city without culture.
When I visit L.A., I see all these negatives. It would be hard not to. But I often wonder, when I see these things more because of my already formed ideas and feelings about the city. I have been to many cities that are run down, dirty, full of pretentious people and have poor transport. Los Angeles is not the only city in the world like this. Bangkok is not a spring chicken, Barcelona needs a good wash, and rush hour in Tokyo is not a joke. But while I. These things in other cities, they do not seem to me so much trouble, as they do in Los Angeles
There are some legitimate things I dislike about Los Angeles. I do not like cities that are too big to get around. NYC is large, but it is easy to get around. Bangkok has a good transport system, and while Tokyo is gigantic, you can still pretty easy to navigate public transportation. But everything is laid out in L. A., and you need to go places. I dislike it have cities with good public transport and Los Angeles. Moreover, L.A. has no neighborhoods. It just always seems to sprawl, and it is filled with too many people trying to do it. Everyone I tried to meet in LA to make it as an actor or a screenwriter.
But these things not really make LA "hateful." None of these "problems" are super disgusting, and I have many funny moments in LA with had my friends. So why is it that I have so much hate Los Angeles? Whence this visceral reaction comes from?
I think back to my recent trip to Ottawa. It was a city that I knew nothing, and I could form my own opinion about the city right on the spot. I loved Ottawa. It was great. Often when we are traveling, we see cities not as they are but as we expect them to be. We take our knowledge with us and use it as a lens to look at the city. When we think of Amsterdam, we think of pot and prostitutes, so that's what we see. We go to Bangkok and see the dirt and pollution, because we know it to be a "dirty" city. We often visit places and do things that promote our preconceived notions of the city. We experience romance in Paris or a party on the island of Koh Phangan. And cities we know that some are least often the places that we love most. We are not looking for things that fit into the shape of our mind has made. We simply take the city as it is-no expectations and no disappointments.

You can use our thoughts to the cities in a way that color, often do not reflect the reality. Yes, I hate L.A., but I suppose if I really thought about it, it's a place is not so bad. I'd rather be in many other places in the world, but I can see that there is something for the people of Los Angeles.
Maybe one day I'll live in Los Angeles and love it. After all, I despised first Bangkok and now it's one of my favorite cities in the world. Step back from my emotional, knee-jerk response to Los Angeles, I see, there are some things that make the city worth visiting and worth living. Because it is near the beach, it is warm all year round, there is much to do, it was good sushi, and it has an affordable cost of living. Plus, you get celebrities all the time on site. (OK, maybe that's just something that I would enjoy!)
We all have preconceived notions about places in the world. When we visit a place we often see it through a prism in our mind that what is really distorted this city over. Sometimes we just need to step back, breathe, and judge a place on its own merits with unclouded eyes. And so it is perhaps not that I hate LA itself, but the version in my head, and after nearly 30 years of representing only that LA, that's all I can see now.
