The secret to long-term travel
I get lots of emails for my secret to ask. People read my posts about how I can do it, but still ask to go when I hold something back. What I go out? What, they ask, is my secret of the cabin to escape and be a nomad? Did I win the lottery? Gotta have a trust fund? There must be something special about me that.
I'm so sick of these emails, I'll finally unpack. I'll probably be kicked out of the secret club of travelers for this, and Rolf Potts and Bill Bryson will likely send their goons after me, but I'll let everyone in our great secret, because you deserve to know.
The great secret is to travel in the long term ...
nothing.
There is no particular secret.
Vagabonds, nomads and long ~~ POS = TRUNC are nothing special. We have no super powers or secret Swiss bank accounts. I used this kind of people to think, were special - unique for what they did. They had to break the secret free from the cabin I found was chained to. I was jealous. I was jealous. I had to live this romantic life of travel determines Globetrotter around the world and amazing adventure that you only read about.
But as soon as I came down the street, I saw that her secret was that no secret was. Many people did this. It was nothing special. It was not clear. I had thought I left on a thrilling adventure to go only a few people to go - then I went to Khao San Road and hung in the summer from Amsterdam. I met travelers young and old exactly the same as me to do, and none of them were trust fund babies either. No, I was not particularly. Many people did this. Only none of them happened my friends from home.
Extended travel is to be a big deal in the world. The gap year is a rite of passage for many people. It is normal to take a year or two to live elsewhere in the world and to work. In some countries it is really abnormal not to. The problem is one of the countries is not America, which is why I thought it was something special. But I found out quickly that it took no footwork or large bank accounts. The only thing these people had, that I had not, the desire was to do what she wanted from the Company's expectations, just because they enjoyed doing it freely. They simply said "want I travel", and then did it and made it work
They did what they wanted -. A revolutionary idea to me at the time. But after years of traveling, I realize that it is not so revolutionary. If people really want something, they do it. If you want a big screen TV or a DVD, then go buy it. If you really want to eat sushi for dinner, go Sushi to have dinner. If you want to travel, you do the same. It is so easy. Just like you, a way to pay for the TV or your new car to find, these travelers just arranged their lives so that they could afford the trip. As the saying goes, where there's a will, there's a way.
People ask me if I worry about bills thoughts, retired, and bla, bla, bla. If you are traveling, all these things disappear. I have no bills now. Exactly what I spend each day. I am a big fan of the idea that we should not our lives work off and that we should pursue our passions short breaks. Why should I spend my best years in an office, money for retirement, I can not even see, or when I see it, might be too sick to enjoy? Yes, we long-term travelers who save a little for a rainy day, but we. Do not worry about the future We enjoy now . Pay attention to your present and your future works. If I stop traveling, I'll find out what's next.
So if you ask travelers, as they do, they do not lie when they say that they did nothing special and that there is no secret. We just made a conscious decision to do it, and then, only worked to our goal, to save money and plans as what would you do with another venture in your life.
And that is the great travel secret.
