The Saturday City: Rome
Rome. The cradle of the West. The center of power for centuries. Birthplace of Caesar. Home of the Catholic Church. A city in 3000 years of history. All over the world, everyone knows Rome. To say the name conjures up images of the old, the new, religion, food, romance and Tom Hanks tried the Da Vinci Code to crack.
I was thrilled to visit Rome. My visit was to last three days, but turned into a whole week. I fell in love with Rome. Despite all the tourists and tour groups that the city could that migrate godless masses, and the congestion nothing away from the beauty of Rome. Rome is Rome ... it does not need to be anything else. The name alone conveys everything, and it's easy to see why everyone loves this city.
Nothing I can write about Rome, it could do it justice. Its beauty and elegance has better far writers and poets has been when I so rather described as talking about the beauty of Rome, I'll show you.
A tour of Rome
I started in the city, where most of the ruins are located. There you can explore the ancient ruins built by Julius and Augustus Caesar as the Roman Empire expanded.
to cross the road and walk through the ancient Roman Forum, the seat Roman power. There are a ton of ruins here and sitting among them down was a sobering experience. Someone thousands of years ago sat in this exact spot, senators and Caesar go past observed.
and then head to the Palatine, where the kings, Caesars and aristocrats of Rome lived.
Then cross the street and at the Coliseum view. It was an incredible place to see. Massive and beautiful.
westward, by the Circus Maximus, and across the River Tiber. There you can walk through Trastevere, a local that few tourists see. It was my favorite part of the city -. Small cobble-lined streets, small squares, great restaurants, and not many tourists
From there, head north to the Vatican, the center of the Catholic Church. There you can check to St. Peter's Basilica and the tombs of the popes, the Sistine Chapel.
From there, it goes back to the East to explore over the river, more of Rome.
watching walk through the Piazza Navarro and the Spanish Steps for a few good people.
Further south, past the Parthenon, Trevi Fountain. Make your way through the crowds and follow tradition to turn around and throw a coin in for good luck.
Then, to finish with this monument, built in Roman style, in honor of Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of a united Italy. It is big and garish, but it's still nice.
Rome is an amazing city. It was not built in a day, and there is more to do there, when my little blog post can handle. In fact, there is more to do there than you can fit during a single short trip. It would take years to see the whole city ... but I am ready for the challenge, are you?
