The Saturday City: Austin
After research, the phrase "Keep Austin weird" by comments from Red Wassenich in 00 inspired while giving a promise to Austin Radio Station. He began later bumper sticker printing and published a book called Keep Austin Weird: A Guide to the Odd Side of Town
now reflects the phrase friendly, artistic, creative and a bit unconventional. Culture that is a paradise for various LGBT, intellectual, scientist and environmentalist communities.
Austin, the state capital of Texas, is an island of blue in a sea of red. It is a liberal city in a state very conservative. In Austin, you will shop food, bicycle paths, alternative bars, hippies, openly gay people, food trucks, art and culture. It is a welcoming place where everyone, happy people, good food like good music and would find themselves at home.
in the past month, I spent 10 days my time in Austin attending the SXSW Music, Film and Tech Festival. This massive event is the result of what was once a small independent music festival. Well, it's a corporate mega show. It was my second time at SXSW and my third time in Austin.
While I have mixed feelings on SXSW itself (I love and hate all at once), which I have not mixed feelings is Austin. I do not think it at all funny. I think the rest of Texas is weird for no longer like to be Austin.
, which is why I love the city and do my part to keep the space "weird." If you do not for the fact really need a car to the city to travel, it would be "would move I in Town" on my list be. Some of my favorite activities are:
Cathedral of Junk
One of the real highlights of my entire trip the Cathedral of Junk check-out was. The cathedral was built by Vince Hannemann sitting around while people with his things hanging. The Cathedral of Junk is just that - a pile of garbage. There are towers of televisions, bicycles, old refrigerators, tires, hubcaps, and much more. I found the location ideal for families. In conversation with some locals, I found out that a lot of people come here with their children; many were running all over the place and believe play a joyful time with makeup. Kids + Junk + = specify a simple afternoon.
Museum of the Weird
This Museum on 6th Street is a typical Penny Arcade with strange oddities like a two-headed chicken, a "fish man", a mummy and even a sideshow. It's one of those "up step and some weird shit, see" kind of places. It is small, taking only 20 minutes to wander through, but it's weird, Austin-like, and kind of fun. Admission is $ 5
Taste of Joy
This hot sauce shop serving hundreds of different types of hot sauces and was the reason for this video :.
If you like hot sauce, come here. They offer free tastings for many sauces. If you want to go crazy, try all sauces on the shelves aptly shaped like a coffin. They are designed for serious spicy addicts only.
Food Trucks
The food trucks in Austin are second only to those in Portland. You can not say that you were eating in Austin, if you are not food truck going around the city-hopping - you get everything from sandwiches to Asian fusion. The South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery on S. 1st Street is really good. Check Anyway, whether from. hear
Music
Austin is known for its music scene, and there are many ways to some world class listen to independent music. Pretty much every bar in town presenting music. The two major music festivals in the city Austin City Limits and SXSW.
Visit Whole Foods
Whole Foods, the nationwide chain, started in Austin and the flagship store is located in the city is located here. This particular store has a wine bar, smoothie bar, beer box, roof terrace, huge salad bars and seemingly endless supplies of vegetables, food and in-store restaurants. It is a food heaven, and it could be my happy place, also.
Watch the bats on Congress
From mid-March to November, the Congress Avenue Bridge in downtown Austin is home to 1.5 million flying bats. Visit at dusk these beauties to watch the Waterfront to head out for their nightly foraging.
on 6th Street drunk
Sixth Street is the famous street in Austin is home to all the bars and restaurants and has a wild, carnival atmosphere during the weekends. This is a great place to meet people.
in Barton Springs Jump
Barton Springs Pool is the main water treasure of the town. Located in Zilker Park (see below) are the natural sources a great respite from the summer heat. If you are up to it, check Hippie Hollow on Lake Travis, Austin nudist beach.
Zilker Park
Zilker Park is in the heart of South Austin. The park offers many different types of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, kayaking, jogging, and everything you do in a park. Barton Springs (see above) is also here. And do not forget to visit the Statue Park.
