The Saturday City: Brasov
I loved my visit to Romania and I found my favorite city Brasov. I had the best time there and I found it to be an ideal base for exploring the area. For some reason hardly anyone visited Romania. I rarely saw any large groups of tourists, while here. But for those travelers who make the journey, they all seem to flock to Brasov. Of all places in Romania I visited Brasov that had most people in any case. I think people are drawn here by the Dracula mythology, although it has nothing to do with him here. (Unfortunately, there are very little Dracula tourism in Romania. I was very disappointed when I some cheesy tourist traps that wanted dedicated to him.) And there is a lot in this part of Transylvania to do Brasov makes a logical base of operations for most People .
Despite the crowds (and I use that term loosely when compare to places like Paris or Amsterdam), I liked Brasov when I found the mix of historic and modern very well balanced. The core of the city is this beautiful medieval destination but a five minute walk in any direction and you begin to see modern glass buildings, shopping malls and wide roads. Moreover Brasov has a large selection of dishes from local Romanian food to tasty international dishes. I also have the fact that there were a lot of trails where you could escape the chaos of the city center. The city had energy to do much, and a close proximity to nature. Throw in some medieval buildings and there is no way, I would not go back to visit. If you find yourself in Brasov, here's what I recommend
Free Tour - There is a free tour of some local students running. (There is also an in Bucharest also.) It takes about 2-3 hours and takes you all over the city. It is very extensive and they offer a good overview of the history of Brasov. It goes at 18:00 from the square
The Black Church -. The main Gothic church in the country, this church is "black", because most of them burned in the great fire of 1689 down most of the interior is actually Baroque now, although many parts of the original Gothic work remain. It also has a few other times when the fire has been renewed. I can not say it's the best church I've ever seen, but it was still interesting to look at the wide range of architectural styles to consider inward
City Museum - , In the town hall, the museum has artifacts from the Stone Age to the present. The best part of the museum is the detailed timeline of the city at the beginning of the museum. The museum is mostly artifacts, old furniture and some weapons and suffers from a common problem most museums in Romania - poor descriptions. You do not have much context for what you are looking for. That being said, I would still be because of all the historical relics go back
Hike the mountain -. With a view of the old town and the surrounding area, Tampa mountain is the big mountain you in the city, next to see. You can walk it if you want (it is not so steep and takes about an hour) or you can take the cable car. There is a restaurant, and you can hang out by the Hollywood-esque sign Brasov
Rope Street -. The narrowest street in Europe at 1.3 m (4 ft) wide. Unlike to be really tiny, there's nothing really special about the street, but it is for a few good photos do
The district Schei - , This neighborhood was outside the city walls were the Romanians lived. Only Saxons were originally allowed inside the walled city to live, forcing the Romanians to live outside undefended. Today the area is a maze of alleys, the medieval-looking houses, quiet streets, some really posh houses and no tourists. I ended up in this area migrate to about 3 hours "lost". It was a peaceful alternative to bustling city center and my foot was one of the highlights of my time in the city. I find nothing more peaceful than aimless stroll through a historic area
The First Romanian School - In the Schei district, you are two points of interest :. The first Romanian School and St. Nicholas Church, both located in the same place. The school is a two-room building. One side has a classroom; the other side stands the first print engine and original books from the 16th and 17th centuries. The docent gives a good little lecture about the history of the school from its 1499
Bran Castle - Bran Castle is a very touristy castle near Brasov. I'm not sure why, but people refer to it as "Dracula's Castle" considering that he had never been there and it has nothing to do with him. But hey, it attracts the masses. (You have dedicated a room to his life and legend.) Despite all the people, I really enjoy the castle. It is a beautiful medieval fortress and the grounds around the castle are also nice. Try it early in the morning to avoid the maddening crowds
Rasnov Fortress -. Rasnov is the second major attraction in the area, according to Bran Castle. Inside the citadel, you can an interesting museum, archery, a tavern. There are also impressive views of the surrounding countryside and the Hollywood-esque Rasnov mark. (They really like their big signs in this area.) The town itself is a mini version of Brasov and is on the way to Bran Castle, so it is convenient to obtain. I took the bus to Bran and on the way back to Brasov, visited Rasnov.
There are a few other attractions in the city do. I have to visit the old historic walls and bastions that still exist. There are also two large towers, the White Tower and the Black Tower, the views over the city. They were old watchtowers and offer excellent views of the city. Just do not pay money to go into it (or one of the other bastions either). They are a huge rip off because there's really nothing inside worth seeing and closed with the roofs, you do not even know a better advantage of the city for your photos get.
Brasov combined to medieval and modern very good. It had a lot more energy and charm than other places in Romania and in contrast to most other medieval towns I saw in Romania has not shut it down at 11am. Overall Brasov was just great. The disadvantage of its size is that it is the main destination for most tourists is to Romania. But once outside the main town square, you will share with the locals the city.
