I Dream of Songkran
Right now, throughout the land of smiles, people with water and flour each soaking. The country can be seen in the middle of the biggest water fight in the world engage as tourists and locals in the time-honored tradition that can go without going out of beer first away moister. Yes, it is again Songkran. Time for the Thais their New Year celebration.
Songkran is a time of purification and rebirth. Originally, the date shifted depending on astrological calendar, but in the 1800s the celebration dates specified. Now welcome Thais a new year April 13 to 15 in his 14th with the main feast. This day is celebrated by attending the temple and the purification of the body and the mind. Water is seen as a way to pay respect to their elders and also symbolizes purification. In ancient times, the elders and the priests themselves were given baths of youth. Many Thais make sure to honor the traditional Songkran before participating in the modern tradition of the world's giant water fight !!
Across the country, people on Super refuel soakers, water balloons, set up "Refill" stations (Thais are very entrepreneurial), and get ready for the three crazy to fill day Party. Everywhere, tourists, expats and locals involved tanked in a huge water war of luck and beer. Bangkok and the northern city of Chiang Mai generally keep the two biggest festivals, but in every city there is something in every part of the country going. It also helps that this time of year is the hottest in Thailand, so this is an opportunity for Thais for a few days to cool.
As I type this, my friends amuse themselves in the City of Angels, unprepared tourists soaking getting wet and having a great time while I'm sitting here and my last Songkran remember. Last year I was with a group of friends on Khao San Road. I lived in the tourist area of Bangkok, which happens to be also the large area for Songkran. During this three-day festival streets are shut down, telling move street vendors, and 100,000 people flooded partially in the most amazing spectacle to take I have ever experienced. Everyone, young or old, is on the streets wipe spraying with water and sometimes your face full of flour.
The all-day water fight carries on into the night, as people dance parties on the road and have main roads are shut down to pick them up. What is this holiday really amazing how friendly all of them. Everyone is so polite covered over in water and smudging with flour. Many will say "sorry" while they do it. As you take in the great water fights, everyone is still all smiles. Walk down the street, spray a stranger, and they just laugh and spray back and move on. You could never this kind of festival in the western people would get drunk and start fights or have unrest would erupt. "Hey man, do not make me wet!", You would say. But here it is all smiles. Everyone expects it.
But as everywhere there to police. I remember to hit the road on foot burning people down and a policeman. After spending some Thai spoken his comrades, three of them started on their faces with looks to move on me. Now we all know what happens when cops involved, so I was not happy to see them as they began to move as close to me and to draw their weapons. They started with me crying in Thai when she came closer and fired. So I did what everyone would do in this situation, I fired back. They got me good, but I made it, one of them quite badly before behind me soak a snuck and covered myself with cold water. Three against one in a water fight is hard, but we all had a good laugh. A holiday to engage where the bull is to be fun safely.
This year I dream of Songkran, but next year I will be holding a water pistol.
Editor's note: I went to another Songkran and I brought a water gun this time
