Interview with Thailand writer Suzanne Nam
A few months ago, I interviewed Panama Guide Author William Friar. Moon leaders liked it so much they asked me if I wanted her to check Thailand leader and interview the author. Since I am interested in getting it, what people write about my favorite country, I agreed.
I found the book to be a lot like the Panama book and other moon guide I have read. Lots of history and history, but short on detailed practical information. There is information about what to see, where to stay and where to eat, but not as there in a Lonely Planet. Then again LP gives you over 10 pages of information with pages and (sometimes too many) pages of places to stay and where to eat. The moon guide is 400 pages long.
One thing that the moon is good authors find that tell stories well, and this is no exception. There seem to be focusing more and more to give you the history and culture of a place, as you say, to find the best breakfast place or coolest club were. How William Friar and his Panama Guide, says author Suzanne Nam the history of each area of Thailand well, so a lot of the background and history of each place. Everyone wants something different in their guide books, which is why so many companies exist. Moon is the guide for all those who have to look for something besides crude Intel. It is the guide for those who want the story behind the target and this book further on this strength
Nomadic Matt :. How long have you lived in Thailand
Suzanne : I have for nearly four years here. I came May 05 on the first time to work as a newspaper reporter. I thought I was here for a year or two, but not left!
How did you as a leader writer at the end?
I as a reporter had to work for a while, when I saw an ad for the job. I contacted moon, sent them then spoke with one of its editors a detailed proposal and.
If the books Thailand to write, how do you decide what goes and what does not go in?
All travelers are different. What one person thinks is the perfect vacation another might not like. Things I enjoy or think are really cool might not appeal to every reader. And people have different budgets and time constraints. So I try to include targets, sights, food, accommodation on a very wide range, so that everyone finds it, they are happy with. But whatever I conclude it has are the best option available, whether it is. A five star resort or a $ 15 bungalow, street food or a fancy restaurant The only rule is nothing mediocre or disappointing when I have warned the reader in advance, and it is a really compelling reason to close it.
Thailand is a fairly touristy country. How would you recommend that people traveling to get there, the local experience?
There are very touristy places in Thailand, but most of the country really all about everyday life! To get a true local experience, choose one of the smaller towns or beaches and just go. You can not find many people who speak English or many well-worn paths, but you will generally find friendly, available to people who do their best to help you. People tend to want to go to places where others have gone before, but the great thing about Thailand is that it to visit many beautiful, interesting or otherwise worthwhile places. If you want to see what life in Bangkok is like, do not stay on Khao San Road. If you want to go to the beaches, but do not want too many tourists, do not go to Ko Samui or Phuket. Try Satun, Trang, Khanom or Sichon, where the other guests probably Thai family will be on vacation at the hotel or bungalow. In the tourist areas such as Chiang Mai, Bangkok or Phuket, you can save a local experience, if you go just a few blocks from most tourist areas. In Bangkok, a very worldly city, there are many neighborhoods in the city center, where you can find any tourists. Have dinner on Nakhon Pathom Road, which is some of the best sights of the city about a mile, and chances are, you will be the only non-Thai person there. And wherever you are, if you find someone with whom you can communicate, go out of their way to talk to them and ask them about their lives!
Every leader has his own personality. How would you describe your guide personality?
Selective. There are many books, websites and other resources are, so it is easy for travelers to find information when they just want to know how to get somewhere or where the hotels are. I can not compete with the Internet, and I want to go not only a full list of locations, outlet to see all the sights, all hotels to stay, and all restaurants to eat. What travelers really need is counseling to cull someone all this information to help them it makes sense to everyone, and the best thing to get it for her. Whether you are a backpacker with a maximum of three months a traveler with 10 days, I want you to have the best possible experience.
