The ruin bars of Budapest
One of the upsides to being an independent writer is that I am my own boss. There are no time limits, no one to bother me, and no external stresses. I get to write about what I want, when I want to - the good, the bad and the ugly. However, since the stories in this blog on what I see and do, I have no one like things to say: "Matt is a cool new trend in this city Here is a plane ticket to go check it out!. and report back here! "
and I never wanted for more than when I was in Budapest a few weeks ago. When I arrived in Budapest last year, no one mentioned to me ever "ruin bars". This year, however, all kept asking Wayne, our hostel go-to-party operators and guides who are taken away from them. "What the hell is everyone talking about?" I asked.
It turned out that they were talking about the hottest nightlife I have come across in Europe.
ruin bars are all the rage in Budapest and has been around for 10 years since the founding of Szimpla Kert, the Mecca of all ruin bars. These bars are (the old Jewish quarter) built in the Budapest Old Town neighborhood VII in the ruins of abandoned buildings, shops, or much. This neighborhood was disintegrating left after the Second World War, so it was a perfect place to develop an underground bar scene. (Not so underground anymore, but.)
From the outside these bars look like normal houses. You have no large signs showing the way, you can hear no noise, and there is no line of people waiting to get to. But as soon as you walk in, and enter the courtyard, you find yourself in the middle of a find hip, artistic, and funky bar fully to speak to crowds, dancing and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. Large bouncers inside, along with posted signs, make sure that the people on their way are quiet, so that the neighbors do not interfere.
When I spent most of my nights in Budapest at these bars, I wish (briefly) that some editor had sent me on assignment years upon them to explore and to write. I have for five years been coming in Europe, and somehow I'm listening only now about these places.
Each of these ruins bars has its own personality, but they all follow a few basic principles: (maybe) find an old abandoned city, rented it, a bar, fill it with flea market furniture, some artists performing in their marks on the walls and to the ceiling, add in some strange antiques, serve alcohol, and watch them in the human flock. Since all of these bars are in abandoned buildings, to open it, close and often move depending on whether the neighbors to find out the patrons get too loud, or an investor comes and buys the property, renovate it. This gives the whole concept of excitement an advantage, because you never know when these places come and go.
If you are in these bars, you feel like you are drinking at your local thrift store. None of the furniture matches. It's all old. It is versatile. It feels like they ransacked just your grandmother's house. The ceilings are all different. For example, immediately has a room where the furniture is on the ceiling, and has Fogasház bicycles hanging from its ceiling. The courses are not repaired or been fixed, and there are still holes in the walls and visible pipes everywhere.
But it all adds up to the "underground" feel any ruin bar. If these places have not been pointed out to me, and I have never found.
But that's the way it's supposed to be.
In addition, I found started a conversation bar relatively simple in an upward ruin. I think the relaxed atmosphere makes it a lot easier, a conversation with a stranger start than in a normal bar. People seemed their guards less. I met interesting locals who were to speak Travel about life in Budapest more than happy and why they are happy, they are not to the euro
These are some of the best bars ruin .:
Szimpla Kert
this was the original ruin bar, opening in 01 and from this trend now sweeping Budapest. It is one of the largest ruin bars and still one of the most popular. Find to find a large, open-air courtyard, an attic filled with eclectic furniture, drinking cocktail bars, music and even an old, slimmed Trabant (communist car) in little. They also sell pizza, after a few drinks, makes for the perfect foot-home snack.
immediately
Instant building is in a whole house. It is one of the club's ruin bars. In instant you can sit, what were once individual apartments and relax on furniture that looks like it was found on the street. They have many of the walls to connect the homes demolished to make room for DJs and dance. Due to its popularity and the fact that there are more "clubby" drinks here are a little more expensive than other bars ruin. But the mood is still good.
Fogasház
Fogasház opened last summer. It is small, low key and less touristy than popular instant and Szimpla Kert. This bar has bicycles and glasses hanging from the ceiling and is far more artistic than the other ruins bars. Small tables dot the courtyard, and you have drowned no loud music, the conversation. They often hold art exhibitions here. They also have a table tennis table.
Doboz
I'm not sure if this place of ruins fits bar culture. It was much fancier and trendier than the other bars that I visited. It was like being in a "real" bar. However, I was taken there as part of a Ruin Bar Tour, and, regardless, I love this place. They go into the yard and be secured by a tree with a red eyes robot to make it welcomes. It looks like a transformer on the attack you. There are two main areas: one red, the other blue. They play a lot of dance music, and this place filled the late night.
Corvin Teto
Located on a supermarket, this ruin bar has an elevator ride, where you can drink on your way to the roof , Corvin Teto is popular because of its large roof terrace, where you can get a wide view of the hills of Buda and the buildings of Pest. This is another dance heavy Ruin Bar, specializes in electronic music. I came here for a drink at sunset and then move to another place.
Grandio
Grandio is a ruin bar and hostel in one. It is famous for its outdoor, tree-filled courtyard, but mostly filled with travelers and people on bar due to the fact crawls that there is also a hostel. This is a good place to start your night and meet other travelers. But during the day you can locals with a drink in the garden relaxing.
Budapest is for sale on the history and the thermal baths, but the ruin bars are by far the most special thing about this city. I wish I'd already know about it, or at least during my trip to Budapest last year. (Perhaps there was a reason tourism Budapest neglected to tell me about them? Hmmmmmm.)
Even if you do not drink, come time to this ruin spend grids. You are a funky way to see a popular and totally unique aspect of life in Budapest. It's simple, the locals here, and, at least turn on, it's like going to an alternative art fair.
