Extreme Budget Travel (less than $ 10 per day) with Tomislav of Croatia -

Tomislav, travel blogger stands next to a lone tree in Tanzania Africa
After my first independent trip overseas in 05 I came to home, quit my job, and willing to travel the world. But at home, I immediately felt alone. Few people supported me, most were confused and even tried the idea to talk me out of it. At the time to leave your job, traveling the world, made people think you were a little crazy. Over a year ago, I have a community area of this site is to mix for us, encourage and advise each other so no one would have to feel that way. I wanted could call a place where people to support. Today we have more than 3,300 members and more than 10,000 posts!

Every month we highlight one or two members on the forum. Today I want to share with all who are not on the forums the story of one of our most active community members, Tomislav could read from Croatia. Tom was to travel the world on an extreme budget ($ 10 per day) since 08 through a variety of ingenious ways. While this level of rigor is not for everyone's (including me), is his spirit and philosophy still amazing and I wanted to share it with you. Without further ado, here's our interview:

Nomadic Matt :. Tell everyone about yourself
Tomislav: My name is Tomislav Perko, I m 30 and I'm from Croatia. I only started to live my life by being born of the usual way "recently - go to school - marry - do the work, you do not like - take credit for 30 years from - have a few kids - retirement - and die "lifestyle. I recently published a book entitled 1000 days of spring , which quickly turned into a bestseller in Croatia, and the time at home, I'm back to work on my second book.

You said you travel recently started. What you up to? Why did you start traveling?
Before I started traveling, I was a stockbroker. Suit, Tie, nice restaurants, a lot of money - this kind of lifestyle. But then came the financial crisis, and I lost everything. That's when I discovered CouchSurfing -. And to hear firsthand stories of people who have passed through my house and see a spark in her eyes, I thought, maybe I should try it out myself

And I have.

Have you always plan one day trips $ 10?
The only thing that is a constant, if it is to talk about my travel plans, I do not really have anything planned. When I started traveling, I had almost no money, and the amount I spent on the road determines how long I could stay on the road. $ 10 was more than enough to cover some basic needs, and the best part was that I really enjoyed traveling in this manner. I loved the challenge of figuring out where to sleep, how to get somewhere, what to eat.

In some ways, almost bankrupt was the best thing that happened to me. While on a low-budget travel you appreciate the little things such as hot meals, soft beds, and transportation, wait a few hours in the sun. They are grateful for the little things that you do not think about it, if you can afford three meals a day, if your shelter has already been agreed and you know to get a way to your destination. They are thankful for all the wonderful things that inevitably occur again and again.

Where did you get the $ 10 figure? Do you have to explore it? Why $ 10 and not more than 20 $ USD?
Well, I did not plan it, $ 10 or to be any other amount, but if I was traveling for a few months, looked at my budget back and did the calculation - it turned out that it was by this amount per day

was of course a few days I spent $ 50 USD or a ticket for $ 100 + USD bought, but I spent a few weeks or months voluntarily and not then. to spend a little. So in the end, it at all levels, to $ 10 per day.

How you remain especially on the budget when you travel?
When it comes to transportation, I hitchhiked especially everywhere I went. It was fast, safe, reliable and free. But the best part was that you. An amazing story of how you got from point A to B, talk to the locals, and learn from them I walked a lot, used to some public transport relocated in cheap countries, a few cars, etc.

As for accommodation, Couchsurfed I have the most time - I had plenty of experience of hosting few hundred people in my own place before I started traveling, so that helped a lot. You spend your time with him / her, they take off with their friends, to family celebrations, and to see some amazing local spots, you would probably miss.

If I did not do CouchSurfing, I slept camped, in parks or next to the road, voluntarily, tried to sit home and home exchange - there are so many alternatives to Ho (s) means are. They require a lot more planning and energy, but they will save you money and give you back so much.

bought and cooked by myself or with my hosts I food in supermarkets, never drank in bars, but in parks, even tried dumpster diving few times. You need to know that food is everywhere, and a lot of it is thrown away - some say that more than 40% of the food produced is thrown away. You just have to find a way to get this food before they throw it. If that means standing in front of a pizza restaurant in Machu Picchu and wait for a few people to the table and leave to let some slices unaffected -. Then you do that

Is this a good idea? I mean, USD $ 10 per day is pretty cheap, and it 's not something I would do. It means that you can 't go to the Louvre, dine on good food in Italy, a boat tour or sign up for a jungle hike.
First of all, this kind of travel is not for everyone. I tried it and I liked it. The thing is, I never traveled to see things. I was experiencing more in. So instead of seeing the Louvre, take a boat tour in amazing restaurants in Italy eating, or going on a hike through the jungle, I was interested to talk with people, to learn from them, and try as one born to live. But you do not need a lot of money

Do not get me wrong -. It's harder and more restrict, but challenges and constraints are the things that the press in being in the moment, and in your power to do anything to get some. That's what I loved that!

Have you worked or volunteered abroad?
I worked on a farm Permaculture under the Himalaya, succeeded a board in Malawi, spent time in some children's homes, cleaned room and took care of 5 dogs and 14 cats in Ecuador. Volunteering is a good way to make money, to save a break, and - most importantly -. Learn about the place that you can visit and be with people living there

Most I found these voluntary options on the spot, or I used to work away.

and when it comes to work, I sometimes have (bad) played the guitar on the streets, or connected to people and asked them if they knew someone that someone able to work various jobs required.

You seem like an adventurous guy. Tell us some crazy situations that you have run into on the street
I would say that these are my top three .:

The craziest story not from the street, but from the sea. I hitchhiked on a 13 meter yacht from Australia to Africa without sailing experience. It was probably the most and least adventurous journey that I've ever been on - most when I talk about it now, after it happened, and the least, when I sail for 45 days. Nothing happened, only four of us around on the small boat, sea and sky around us. Nothing else.

Then spent there three days at the border between Iran and Pakistan with Iranian military, ending with guys in some dental laboratory stay all day smoking opium long, across the border and is set in the bus with an armed escort and 43 hours to reach the capital Islamabad.

and it was also driving all day from Swaziland to the north of Mozambique, the singing riding my driver to keep him awake, finally to drink in some small town where everyone is in the middle of the night , and to spend in my sleeping bag at night under an old truck because it was raining.

they give us a unique money-saving tip.
The Internet is your friend. There are so many ways to save money, and they are only a few clicks away. Find opportunities voluntarily; Accommodation through Couchsurfing, house sitting or home exchange; Transport carrying passengers, car or boat relocating hitchhiking ... and realize that every dollar, less a few days spent worth on the street.

All this seems like a lot of work. How much time you have the business owner, find rides, work shares, etc.? ,
Many

I repeat: the travel is not necessarily a vacation. When traveling, especially in this way is a lot of work. People think to do this is cocktails only on some beautiful sandy beach, but the truth is sometimes quite the opposite -. They are lonely, hungry or sick and you have to deal with it

Same with finding transportation, accommodation and food. It is easy to check the bus schedule and go to the terminal, but it can out of the city difficult to get a good hitchhiking to find place for hours waiting there with many drivers to talk, looking for couchsurfing hosts, they wisely choose their find homes in foreign cities, etc.

There is a lot of work, no doubt. But is it worth of work. It does in any case. Every day.

solo traveler cooking with host family overseas

your family and friends to support your travels? Did they ever?
you do now, after many years, but it was not always so. I had is concerned to deal with the usual questions of my parents, I thought, I'm not my life right with, etc. But over the years they have become accustomed. I emailed every day my mother, no matter where I was (except from the Indian Ocean), we have over Skype often talk, and when they saw me a life of my trips to make, to be in the media, presentations to hundreds of people give, they realized that this is my way, and now they are great supporters for me to travel

But I know it's still hard for them. it has to be, if your child goes away, especially if he / she wants to hitchhike and sleep beside the road. But in the end they have to, or they should understand your urge to explore and luckily your way.

What advice would you give to new travelers?
Travel in the world not the best thing. It will not solve all the problems; You can lonely in your sleeping bag, hungry, be freezing. It is not something you have to do.

But if you want, if you feel this desire to go into the unknown, then you must know that it is possible. I'm not saying it's easy, because you have to adjust your lifestyle to the road, but it can and will be worthwhile, no matter what happens.

If I did, I think anyone can.

Whether large or small dorm?

I have only slept in a dormitory residence about 10 times in my life, and most of those times were when I was voluntary. But if I have the choice, I prefer small dorms.

A point can be t travel without?
My Little Sheep. This sheep is my important travel companion. Why? First of all I have. As a gift from a very good friend of mine who knows me best Secondly, I am also a sheep (or ram): stubborn, impulsive and enthusiastic. In a way, it reminds me of who I am. Third, they want to send a message. Basically it is a sheep, but they do not listen to the shepherds, or follow the herd. She does what she wants - she is traveling on her face with a smile! You want to know more people in this way of life, without limits, without fear.

after that all in mind, it was logical that it connects me on my travels. Every now and then it is lost and traveling solo. One summer she emigrated to Portugal, Spain and France, and a time when she lets me in Kuala Lumpur to the left, I had no idea where. But it always comes back to their favorite travel companion!

Tomislav definitely has its own style of traveling. It is something that I do not think I would do (camping is not really my thing, and I love museums too much to skip it), but it shows us that where there is a will, there is way and it is possible to travel for very, very little money. He has lived in exotic places for a day for less money than most people spend on lunch! Take a page from Tom book and make it happen. Even if you do not want to travel him, he shows us that may be possible with a little creativity, any trip.

You can Tomislav and all his fantastic adventures found on Facebook, YouTube, TEDx, and his blog tomislavperko.com.
