Waitomo Glow Worm Caves

Waitomo Glow Worm Caves -

A peak into the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves Waitomo, New Zealand for one thing known. Every year, heaps upon heaps travelers come here to see the famous firefly lining the ceiling of the nearby caves. The fireflies emit a phosphorescent glow that shines from inside the caves like a starry night.

The interesting thing about the fireflies that they are not really fireflies. You are fly larvae. What glows? Well, that's their waste and snot. The larvae glow prey in their threads to pull by the prey make believe that it outdoors, since the cave ceiling like stars looks night. Hungry larvae shine brighter than those who have just eaten.

There are a few ways to see the fireflies. There are the three-hour black-water tube travel, the five-hour trip that includes abseiling and climbing, or, if you like it simple, a boat. Despite the darkness are involved, my fear of heights is too big, so I waived the five-hour cave trip with the go more grounded three hours.

early morning waking, my group, the line from the cold water Ruakuri cave. We wetsuited and practiced in the inner tubes we jump would go through the caves. I was not happy that I did not jump, but two small waterfalls. Worse, it had to be done in reverse, so that I could land in my pipe. The waterfalls are only one or two feet high, but I hate heights. But at that moment a wet suit realize not keep you dry, but simply wet, I found something I hated even more.

Jump In our practice, we wet-suit-wearing a lot of 12, boot-wearing, helmet-wearing backpackers marched gently toward our goal. After a short walk in the woods, we entered the reign of "fireflies and received a quick guide on how the next few hours would be given. Unfortunately it felt lasted longer than the travel away from light as the tutorial, surrounded by darkness and the noise cold of the water, seemed the hours in minutes pass. the way I experience is set, the end of the tunnel came and we were back top.

But the experience between . was amazing According to our instructions, we started in the cave descend we walked through narrow openings and tunnels and waded through fast moving and very cold water Sometimes the water was ankle-deep, sometimes in the chest Finally we came to the first milestone... waterfall # 1 I met the waterfall with trepidation. My group, knowing my fear, encouraged me to go first, but that had not happened. I went third. My fear was that I never jump far enough to clear the rocks. I did not jump far enough. When my pipe has landed in the water, my foot touched lightly on the floor rocks.

From there it's an easy ride through the cave where about you, you begin to see in the sky fireflies like stars. They seemed limitless in number. It reminded me of my childhood when I used to put these glow-in-the-dark cosmos sticker on my blanket and rigid as it illuminates my room

But the biggest challenge of the day was before. Waterfall # 2. This waterfall was much higher than the first, and I could also Niagara Falls were. I had to make any two count, before I was ready to jump. I closed my eyes, I jumped, and this time I jumped far enough. But I hated every minute of it. I prefer to have my feet on the ground.

But from here to the end, it was smooth sailing ... or tubes in this case. The rest of the way was all fireflies. Reclining in my pipe, I floated down the river to admire the beauty of the light show and the rest of my surroundings. But the end of the tunnel was too fast, and I was missing left back and stare up just a little bit longer.

I can see why the glow worm caves are one of New Zealand's biggest tourist attractions. They are beautiful. The caves are peaceful. Overall, it's an amazing experience. Three hours seemed too short 'but 5 hours might have been a bit too long. I would go again the firefly to see, and if you abseil, tube or just cruise in a boat are, do not let the fireflies escape.

There are many companies that can take you into the cave. You can go with Blackwater Rafting (the company I went with)., Rap, Raft 'n' Rock, Banned Caveworld, and a ton of other There are a lot of operators here, and they all offer similar tours. The price of a tour of three hours is 100 NZD, the five-hour tours 150-210 NZD, and the boat tours around 70 NZD. It is not a cheap activity, but a you should strive to do.
