Saturday Location: Hoi An
Hoi An in central Vietnam is, and is the center of Vietnam garment industry - at least for tourists.
Hoi An was a major international port in the 16th and 17th centuries, and an important center for Chinese and Japanese immigration. Many of these old structures remain, and the heart of the city is still the Old Town, full of winding lanes and Chinese-style shophouses. A river flows through the city, dividing the old section of the main residential area.
The city has managed to get most of its historic buildings, and the rapid development you see apparently in other parts of Vietnam skipped this area. The city's economy relies heavily on tourism and clothing. In fact, tourists (including me) to come to this city for three reasons :. Food, clothing, and the Old Town
Hoi An is known for its good food. I'm probably the only person who went to Vietnam and not like the food. Across the country, I was impressed not only with what I ate. However, Hoi An was different. I found the food here. I loved the Cau Lau, a dish similar to Pho but not so slippery. There are pork, noodles, spices and fresh herbs and vegetables, but the taste and texture was much better. Real Cau Lau is only in Hoi An found because it is not considered authentic if the water is not from a fountain in the city. The White Rose, a shrimp dish is also good as the fried wontons. Here's a tip though: over the river Food Most tourists stick to the restaurants in the old town or in the immediate vicinity, but if you cross the river in the residential area, the owners chase practically down! for your business. The prices are half of what they. In the old town, and you avoid the crowd of tourists during dinner
clothing is probably the biggest attraction in Hoi An screeching. In a country of cheap clothes is known, is Hoi An in a league of its own. Everything can be done here, and made inexpensive. Shops throughout the city, selling T-shirts and jeans for a few dollars, and the central warehouse of the city is all you want to do. Browse through magazines and have only a little, and the next day is yours, tailored fit on you. Would you like a new pair of Nikes? You can also find.
The quality is really good also. Most international clothing manufacturers have done their stuff in Vietnam, so the workmanship and quality is the same. Half of the material is likely to anyway raised from the Versace or Nike factory! Actions may contain as little as $ 50 USD costs, and an entire wardrobe for less than USD $ 150 to buy. It is such a big business here, that the Vietnamese Post has dedicated a special office overseas including shipping packaging.
Finally, there is the beautiful old town. This section of Hoi An was preserved by strict building code, something I found very unusual in a country that everything seemed ready to develop. The old town is a collection of historic Chinese and Japanese residential buildings and temples. You can visit all the temples and a row of houses. I pointed to a house and the old owner showed me and gave me tea. He has charge me anything, either. I still do not know that he fully understood why I was there. I enjoyed the Japanese Temple and Japanese Bridge, the best of all the temples. However, the best part of the day is ending with a 30-cent beer, the sunset to watch while on the river. Many cafes line the river, and at sunset, they fill the people to enjoy the last remnants of the day.
Overall there is not much to do in Hoi An. Without a good book or to order a desire to see for some excitement itching elsewhere, but the beauty of Hoi An is that it is an oasis of peace in a country that can sometimes be overwhelming.
I some parts of Vietnam like, but Hoi An is the only thing that I really loved.
