The Saturday City: Chester

The Saturday City: Chester -

the main street in Chester England In honor of me to be overseas, this Saturday the city is the one I'm in-Chester, England. It is an old city, dating from Roman times. Chester was in 79 AD. As for North fortress founded expansion. The city itself is still surrounded by ancient walls and has one of the most complete wall systems in England. The city grew in importance in the early Industrial Revolution but is now no longer a center of industry, but a modern suburb of the larger town of Manchester. Chester is the typical construction of a "typical English town" with its Victorian buildings and cottage houses.

In the two days that I am here, I really enjoyed my time. The train ride up led me through the English countryside and the surrounding lands. All the rain makes England a very green country! Chester itself is a whole city. I was amazed by the tranquility that always seemed to me- wrap as if if it were not residents of the city. One seldom hears the sounds of cars or people or even birds out in downtown.

The Chester center looks like something out of an old novel. The pictures here are pretty representative of all buildings. Charles Dickens would be proud. The old taverns, hotels and small shops have received all their charm and their original color. I'm not sure if that was on purpose as a way to preserve their past or they were too lazy to modernize. I suspect it was the latter.

The houses in Chester are typical Victorian. I wait sometime to get into a wedding dress for Mrs. Havisham. Small houses with bricks and crisscrossing wooden fronts and glass windows. It's all very Dickens. Chester is a great tourist destinations for hikers and those who like horses. As of May they have horse racing and everyone comes in on Sundays.

While most of Chester appeal and charm comes from its Dickens feel there is to do a few things in the city. The highlight is the wall. The old town is surrounded by an old Roman wall, which is in 45 minute walk and allows you a number of the old city to see the racecourse, the river, the new city and a few historical landmarks. It is a good starting point. The most famous part of the wall is the east gate. Furthermore is the second most photographed clock in England.

In addition to the wall is an historic cathedral. There was 4 pounds to enter, I did not go. But it was really nice out there. There are a few old Roman ruins on the southeastern part of the city. There is also an old castle, which is now a museum. If you also feel like there are some riverboat rides. Overall, the highlight was running around for me and "being" only in my vision of England.

I like Chester. It is a beautiful city and gives you a typical English experience, if there is such a thing. Chester is the kind of city that you see in brochures advertising England- chalets, monsters, old Victorian house, and many "quaint" shops. The city is definitely worth an overnight or at least a day trip from Manchester or Liverpool
