to visit my 28 favorite places in the United States

to visit my 28 favorite places in the United States -

san francisco, california
From sea to shining sea, the United States is home to a diverse landscape - both culturally and physically. has Spending months on its vast landscape trips gave me a deep appreciation for all my country has to offer.

After traveling 13,000 miles across the continental United States this spring (and more, if you count my previous road trip in 06), I wanted to share with you some of my favorite destinations. I have already talked about my favorite restaurants and experiences, it seems only appropriate that road trip posts with my favorite to finish 28 destinations:

( Note: This list just based on where I was myself There are many more are incredibly stunning locations -. such as Yosemite or Hawaii - I have not been explored, which is why they do not appear on this list)

Memphis

the restaurants of memphis at night
gritty, industrial and a bit run down, Memphis as its best times already appears behind him, but do not be fooled not let the rough exterior - the town home is still to some killer food and a lively blues music scene. Moreover, there are Graceland (Elvis home) for fans of the King, a wide promenade for walking, and the phenomenal, detailed and moving Museum of citizenship (it is huge, so it does not rush!). I enjoyed the city more than I expected and was disappointed when I had to go. To use a cliché, it's a hidden gem!

Austin

My new home (surprise! I moved to Austin!), And each visit makes me love it more and more. The warm weather, the lively taverns and live music, funky house bars on Rainey Street, amazing hiking and biking trails, and tons of outdoor activities ... Austin has it all. Thanks to all of the growing food truck population to the flagship Whole Foods store with the incredible salad bar, I eat (grilled pineapple!) - And eat well - nonstop. The Austin campus of the University of Texas has a youthful vigor in the city, and his liberal attitude attracts a diverse and eclectic population. In short, you can not skip Austin, because if you do, I see, and drag it.

are for more travel tips for Austin, check out this post on the things to do. (I also have a hostel in Austin!)

New Orleans

beautiful new orleans
New Orleans is a city with soul. It has seen some tough times, but it lives with joy unmatched by most places. It has a rich and long history and is filled with delicious French-inspired Creole and Cajun food, live jazz music, street performers and an appreciation for all the trials of life. Life is lived in the Big Easy good here. They come here not to relax - you come here to indulge! In my opinion, New Orleans one of the most versatile and vibrant cities in the United States.

For more travel tips for New Orleans, read in this article, such as 4 days there to spend full of delicious craft beer, food and hipsters. North Carolina Mountains

Asheville

downton abbey mansion in asheville
Asheville Portland in is. I liked the area a lot, including its proximity to some wonderful and picturesque mountain hikes like the Carolina Mountain Trail. In addition, the city has many parks for those who want something closer - and be sure to check the Ashville botanical gardens near the university campus. The beautiful Smoky Mountains are a short drive away and the huge Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned home in the United States and once the home of George Vanderbilt, on the outskirts of the town. If you have ever seen Downton Abbey, is what the house is like! (And if you have not, you should! The show is addictive!)

The Pacific Coastal Drive

a view of the pacific from the pacific coastal drive
The drive of the Pacific coast up is considered one of the most beautiful in of the world. I have to agree. I did not travel all the coast, but the part was gone I (San Francisco to Portland) incredible: steep cliffs, forests on the coast descending, miles of beaches and giant redwoods. It's jaw-dropping all the way. Be prepared to make slow progress, as you'll often stop pull over, walk and enjoy the view. I especially liked Bandon and Coos Bay, Oregon, and Mendocino, California.

Redwood National Park

beautiful redwood trees in the redwood national park
along the Pacific Coast is Redwood National Park, a large expanse of giant redwood trees filled with picnic spots, places to camp and miles upon miles of trails. Trails range from easy to challenging, and there are many loops of the nearby beaches head. It is quite beautiful, awe inspiring and humbling in every respect.

Glacier National Park

awe-inspiring views at the glacir national park
Although I visited, as most of the park was still closed (it was too early in the year, and there was still snow around) I have through the area was stunned: rise gorgeous snowy mountains in the sky; a beautiful, sea is still, in which you can admire these mountains and large glaciers; and trails galore. It was mind blowing place I saw on my trip, and I can see why everyone raves about it. I can not visit there enough.

Denver recommend

the denver skyline at night
The mile high city (not least because marijuana is legal), Denver has a mix of outdoor ruggedness and metropolitan life. It has a huge craft beer scene, excellent restaurants (including Sushi Sasa, one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the world), a large international airport with many connections, and the proximity to the mountains (and the Republic of Boulder). It is clean, and the locals are incredibly friendly. There are few cities in the US I want to live, but I love Denver enough to say that it is one of them.

Chicago

the bean sculpture in Chicago
If the weather is nice I do not think there is a better city in the United States. On the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago has world-class food (try the deep dish, sushi and hot dogs), the fun and cheesy Navy Pier, Millennium Park with its famous bean-shaped statue, a kick-ass Aquarium, and iconic architecture (be sure to take an architecture tour). And if the winter deep freeze is over, Chicagoans burst out of their homes to enjoy the summer weather, so it positive, happy mood to go out through the city. Take it.

New York City

the impressive new york city skyline
The city that never sleeps. 'Nuff said. You can not go wrong here.

Natchez

sunset over the mississippi on the natchez outskirts
I was very surprised by this Mississippi town. I knew nothing about it, but Natchez was seen as a place recommended restored 19th century homes that want built by isolated plantation owners to flee the summer and to interact and socialize with each other. When cotton was king, the houses got bigger and more elaborate. Now they are historical monuments, and you can visit them while enjoying overlooking the Mississippi River. It is off the beaten path - .. And my favorite discovery of my last roadtrip

For more travel tips on Natchez, check out this post on my explorations there

Savannah

an antebellum mansion in savannah
on the coast of Georgia seats, Savannah escaped the wrath of the civil war, ostensibly because Sherman thought it was destroyed too good. With streets with Spanish moss covered trees, large and inviting parks lined, and a lively waterfront, Savannah is wonderful place to experience the slow pace of the Old South. I had planned this city visited many, many years, but its beauty, Southern Comfort food and rest with me over the years firmly.

Grand Canyon

an amazing view from the top of the grand canyon
words' t accurately describe how amazing the Grand Canyon is. It's stunning -its in many ways sheer size, fantastic depth, reds and striking views. Most people are just on the edge of the ravine and the view of it, but its true greatness and beauty are best with a hike estimated to the ground. Make the time to Colorado River hike down, walking the less frequented routes, spend the night, and migrate back to the sunset.

Nashville

a street of music bars in nashville
a little country, a little tech, Nashville is one of the fastest growing cities in the US and rightfully so. It is a wonderful music scene (duh), got a growing cocktail bar scene, and some down-home Southern restaurants. There are not many "tourist stuff" to do here, but what make this city one of my favorites are the music, the food, the wild kind and happy man, and the positive energy of the city seems to radiate. If you are here, planning to spend a few hours in the Tennessee State Museum. It goes into great (though sometimes very biased) in detail about the history of the state, but it is more exciting than you might think.

San Francisco

the golden gate bridge from san francisco beach
foods of any nature, hipster, high-tech and a diverse population in San Francisco to make one of my favorite places to visit. Moreover, it is near some wonderful National Parks, as Muir Woods, where you can walk to escape the city and go under huge trees. This city is changing rapidly (good or bad), and I'm always on my next visit. San Francisco has so much to do that you need at least four days really appreciate. The city is one of the cultural centers of the United States and not to be overlooked.

Miami

miami beach
White sand beaches, Cuban food, wild nightlife, beautiful people and amazing warm weather - what is Miami's not to love! I do not think I could ever live here, but for a weekend of fun in the sun, Miami is perfect.

San Diego

a pier on the san diego beach
Forever warm and sunny, creates weather San Diego a permanently happy population that is friendly and outgoing and that nature loves - from hiking, days on the beach or ... and they are always happy to show people their city. The downtown Gaslamp area - as well as the famous Pacific Beach - is full of trendy seafood restaurants, lively bars and some seriously life changing taco stands. I love San Diego.

California Wine Country

a selection of wines from Napa valley
California is home to some of the best wines in the world, and a visit to the Sonoma and Napa Valley regions will reward you with some fine restaurants next to the wine , Take the short trip from San Francisco and learn to appreciate wine! Tip: Sonoma is cheaper than Napa

lake Tahoe

the beautiful forests around lake tahoe
Although the water level of the lake, as well as the flora and fauna around it, unfortunately, due to the California depleted drought, Lake Tahoe is still nevertheless impressive and beautiful. Surrounded by small mountain communities, this is a great place for hiking and boating in the summer and skiing in winter.

Anywhere in Montana

the majestic rolling plains of montana
It has also been a lot written about how stunning Montana is, but it's all wrong. It is even better than words can describe. It's the craziest beautiful state I've ever been, filled with wonderful mountains and hills, can be as far as the eye. The people are super cool, inviting, and outdoorsy also. If I pick a favorite state, it would be Montana. I love Montana.

Washington D.C.

the white house in washington d.c.
The capital of the United States is a vibrant, international city, and that's what I love about it. It is second only to NYC in the diversity of people and food (which is to be expected with so many people of international aid organizations and embassies). You hear a million accents in this city! Throw in the free Smithsonian museums, many parks, the river for strolling or running, and some historical government buildings and monuments, and DC is a phenomenal place to visit, relax, eat and drink!

Cape Cod

a sunny cape cod beach
I spent a lot of summer on the Cape, as there to escape for the summer New Englanders. You will find many small seaside resorts along the coast (Provincetown and Hyannis are the best known, but I also love Chatham, Falmouth, Wellfleet, and Brewster). If you are interested in seafood, beaches, promenades and hat you're looking to perfect family vacation on the Cape!

Boston

a historic statue surrounded by flowers in boston
I may be biased because I grew up here, but I love Boston and my visits care home. Boston Rocks (Go Red Sox!). It is historically (1630 established), rather small, easy to get around, and filled with great and loyal people. It is home to a ton of activities, such as the Freedom Trail and Faneuil Hall, the JFK Museum and the Boston Commons and Public Garden, as well as some of the best Italian and seafood restaurants in the country. Be sure to eat at Zaftigs for the best brunch in town! It is evil!

Las Vegas

the glamorous hotels and casinos of the las vegas strip
Vegas, baby, Vegas! Many people are of the bright lights and gambling, but Vegas is off a lot more than the casinos, expensive clubs and hotels on the famous Strip. It's incredible hiking near Red Rocks National Park, a growing art scene, a booming tech scene thanks Tony Hsieh, Downtown project, and many concerts and shows. Get the Strip, explore the real Vegas from (because technically the strip is in Paradise, NV, Las Vegas is not) and see why people choose to live here.

Portland

a sunny public plaza in portland, oregon
Portland is unbelievable. I would move there if they had a larger airport with better connections. Here you will find an impressive food truck scene, cool customized bars and cocktail lounges, find a craft beer scene, the religion of the inhabitants, relaxing parks (including a quiet Japanese garden), a lively arts scene, and hiking in the nearby mountains , Portland is a wonderful city, especially in summer when the weather is perfect and there are festivals and events galore, as the World Domination Summit and the Portland International Beerfest.

Seattle

neon lit farmer's market in seattle
House, a small company called Starbucks, it also has an exciting downtown, fresh fish, authentic Asian cuisine, art museums and funky nightlife. Located in the historic Pioneer Square, you can go on an underground tour of the ruins of the city (a hella cool experience). In addition, you are right on the water and in warm weather can explore on Elliott Bay head out of a few small islands. Seattle is a cool city. There is always something to do, it's techy, and everyone is relaxed. Plus, there are craft beer and coffee -. What's not to love about

deadwood

the snowy main street in deadwood
Hidden in the west of South Dakota was this city to be famous in the old west days, remarkably enough the focus of an HBO series. One type creates cheesy and new, it is nevertheless a very cool place where you can experience a taste of the old frontier days. It is also conveniently close to the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore.

Kansas City

Joe's BBQ in kansas city
I really loved this city, some of the world's best BBQ has a vibrant city center and the most modern technology such as Google Fiber. There is also a detailed and insightful Jazz Museum here as well as an eye-opener Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (that was the real name, I'm not being racist). I wish I could have spent more time, but this is just one more reason to come back.

The United States with too many "must see" places filled list in a blog post. After all, the country that is home to over 350 million people and covers 3.8 million square miles. I have seen only a fraction of that in my life, and it attracts me to do more. But for those looking for a starting point for where to go and what to see, this list should point you in the right direction.

Just be sure to turn off the highway, proceed in the small towns and discover some favorites of your own
