Sailing the Whitsundays
Located at Airlie Beach on the east coast of Australia, the Whitsunday Islands are a popular destination for travelers. Every backpacker who traveled to the East Coast takes a cruise through the Whitsunday Islands. It is one of those must-see attractions. The tours usually last for three days and two nights. But let lunch on the first day there and return the third morning, it's more like two days and two nights.
I called went OzSail with a company. Heading out on a cloudy Sunday, we boarded our boat, freight train. Freight is an old boat. Built in the 1980s as a German speedboat, the boat is quite small. It fits 18 people in the berth and three crew members. If it were me, I would have picked up a bigger boat. There is nothing really wrong with the boot if you want a typical "sailboat" Freight Train is a fine good choice. I hate to be only on small boats. But go where your friends are, and my friends were there. I took the boat, because my friend Phil was on. It turned out, my friend Caitlin and two Swedish girls I met in Noosa, were it also. Small world, is not it?
The Whitsunday Islands are beautiful, but I had the misfortune to visit the islands during Queensland rainy season. Apart from a few hours of sun, the whole three days were filled with clouds and thunderstorms. Every time I was getting ready to get a tan, came the rain in torrents.
As the boats leave lunch on the first day, you just need to have enough time for a snorkel trip before you set anchor at night. Because of the weather and the rain, the snorkeling was not that great. The water was cloudy and there was not much fish. But nothing could be done about it, and we moved on, anchored for the night, ate and drank until ... well, at about 10 am. A funny thing about on the water your perception of time changes will be. After the sun goes down and you spend hours on the deck, you start really late it is to think. "It must be as 1:00!" Someone would say. No, it's 10:00 and time for bed. It's probably the only time backpackers go to bed that early.
The second day was much better. We went to the famous Whitehaven Beach for swimming. Whitehaven is what you see in all magazines and postcards of the Whitsundays. It's a long, pure white beach. It was nice, until the rain came to spoil the moment, and we went back to the boat. We drove around a bit to find a cove to stop and snorkel in. By the time of the year, there were few places to go, and for our captain, the bay we stopped in maybe only boats 10 days to see a year much better to make the fish and reef system. I decided instead to dive snorkel. The coral was beautiful, we saw a lot of fish, and I found a turtle. This was truly the highlight. We followed the turtle around for a while and then we realize the surface needed, she waved goodbye and came to the surface.
to the Whitsundays Sailing is quite simple. You can book directly with one of the large enterprises. However, the best way to save money is to book a tourist office or hostel. You will save a lot more money in the end because it. Better prices and deals Everything is provided except snacks and alcohol available for you on the boat. Make sure you stock up on them before you leave. In addition, try to find a boat that on the third day leaving early the first day or late, so you get more time on the islands.
I can only imagine how the islands would, if it would have looked nice and sunny every day. If the weather was nice, you could see the attractiveness of the place. Sailing on the water to stop for swimming, exploring a few islands-it is a great way to spend a few days. But I would not spend longer. While beautiful, there are more great places in Australia to visit. If you are short on time and money, then I would save both and go up towards Cairns activities to do up there.
