Exploring Chicago
In 1871 burned most of Chicago down. The summer was really dry, and the city of wooden houses waited a matchbox lights are It had been all summer small fire, and it was only a matter of time before the city erupted into a big flame. Around 9:00 am on Sunday, 8 October started a fire that eventually an area consumes about four miles long, covers more than 2,000 acres. It destroyed more than 17,500 buildings and in real estate $ 222 million. Of the 300,000 inhabitants, 0,000 were left homeless.
The traditional account for the origin of the fire that was started by a cow in a barn on a lantern occur owned by Patrick and Catherine O'Leary. Mrs. O'Leary and her cow were reviled quickly, but that was more a reflection of the anti-immigrant mood at the time as a real cause. The city has release Mrs. O'Leary and her cow of any wrongdoing in the 190s!
But from this tragedy, the town was built anew with wider roads, steel and brick buildings and more green space. Chicago architecture is some of the best in the world. Beginning in the early 1880s, architectural pioneers of the Chicago School studied steel frame construction and the use of large areas of flat glass. Chicago had some of the first modern skyscrapers. William LeBaron Jenney the Home Insurance Building is often considered to be the first to steel used in its structural frame instead of cast iron. Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie School affects both building and furniture designs. People like George Fuller helped shape architecture and design. Much of Chicago is in the late 19th century / early 20th century American Gothic style, which was the final style for many buildings throughout the country.
I was fortunate to find myself in this architectural wonderland at the end of July for TBEX. While driving in 06 in the US, I ended my trip here. The city left a lasting impression on me, and I was happy to visit again.
While the city for a number of reasons is famous, its largest today are its green areas and architectural beauty attracts. There are plenty of green spaces and parks in the city are best known-Grant and Millennium Park, home to the famous Chicago Bean. Chicago was "greening" in the hope of the most environmentally friendly city in the country to be. There is even a roof garden on the City Hall. For me, Chicago most prominent feature is its architecture. It has one of the most beautiful skylines in the country. Wide streets lined with American Gothic buildings and modern skyscrapers steel provide stunning visual images and stunning photos.
But my trip was not only spent romantic about the architecture grow while in the park on foot. With my Chicago Press book in hand, I was determined to so many sites to see how I could, especially since they were free. I explored the Chicago Aquarium, which also provides an excellent view of the city. Unfortunately, it does not provide excellent information on the fish it has. I also found it to be child focused on having a good time and less than solid information, especially about the poor condition of our oceans. The displays looked like they contain a lot of detailed information, but I went away much more commonly known as information without knowing. Go for the fun, not the facts!
When I Museum lovers, I made sure quite a few to visit. Although the details from me to museums on foot are pretty boring, I'll say, but the art museum near Millennium Park has an amazing impressionist wing. I was very impressed with their Monet Collection.
My favorite adventure in Chicago was to Navy Pier. Never been, I was eager to this famous place to check before I went. Navy Pier is something like a carnival in a city. It includes some rides, a Ferris wheel, lots of restaurants, a Shakespearean theater, boat tours, a strangely large number of beer gardens and even mini golf. While the place is a little campy itself, are to do with so many things, it seems like a good place to walk around on a nice day, have a drink, take the kids, or go on a date.
Chicago beauty is everywhere and in everything. Moving in a relaxed and slow pace, even during rush hour, Chicago always feels like Saturday. Because of its beautiful architecture, green spaces, and delicious food, Chicago is one of my favorite American cities (third behind New York and Boston). No visit ever grow old.
