Unusual location of the Month: Chernobyl
Ever thought to visit a nuclear power plant? How about one that had a breakdown? Well, I do not think. About twenty years after Chernobyl exploded, you can explore the area. They were running routes known to the site of the worst nuclear disaster to mankind in the last few years.
The Chernobyl Power Complex is located, 130 km north of Kiev, Ukraine, a critical meltdown had in 1986 accident destroyed Chernobyl 4 reactor, killing 30 operators and firefighters men ~~ POS = HEADCOMP within three months and hundreds of radiation in subsequent years. In addition, large areas of Belarus, Ukraine, Russia were contaminated to varying degrees. It was a great disaster for the former Soviet Union.
On April 25, was the crew reactor in Chernobyl 4 started for a test, how long to determine turbines that would provide preparation to spin after a loss of main power supply. A number of operator actions ahead, trying test and by the time it was the operator to shut down the reactor, the reactor was on the way to critical.
to a steam explosion released fission products into the atmosphere. Approximately two to three seconds later, a second explosion threw fragments of the fuel channels and hot graphite from the surrounding area.
It is appreciated by all of the xenon gas, released about half of the iodine and cesium and at least 5% of the remaining radioactive material in the reactor core in the accident. Most of the material was deposited near as dust and dirt, but the lighter material was wind on the Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and to some extent on Scandinavia and Europe.
After the explosion, about 45,000 residents were evacuated from the area, especially from the investment of operators Pripyat. This place is a ghost town and a large part of each Chernobyl Tour. On 4 May all who were living within a 30 kilometer radius evacuated and relocated later. Strangely (and crazily enough) about 1,000 people returned because unofficially living within the contaminated zone. In the years after the accident, another 210,000 people were resettled areas in less polluted, and the initial radius of 30 km exclusion zone covering 4,300 square kilometers, has been extended.
If you are so inclined, you can Chernobyl Tour area. Tours cost about $ 130-0 USD will last a full day, departure and return to Kiev. Tours leave early in the morning and return at 18.00
On exciting and really creepy tour are after Chernobyl past Dytyatky head over the border into the containment area. In Chernoybal, get with the leadership of "Chernobylinterinform" agency and hear all about the accident to meeti. You will receive a radioactive fish in the cooling channel to feed and then see Reactor # 4 go covered in concrete. Then there is a bus stop near the "Red Forest." The name comes from the ginger-brown color of the pine trees after they died from the inclusion of high levels of radiation in the connection. (Good times do not you?) And finally, visit Pripyat, the city they evacuated because of radiation poisoning. There is nothing but abandoned homes, cars, and a few crazy people who wanted to move back. Thereafter, for rapid radiographic inspection at the checkpoint the back (do not try to use!) And back to Kiev.
All tours do the same, so that the only difference between the company's quality and price. To learn more, you can do a simple Google search, but you are better off booking any tour in Kiev, as you probably negotiate your price at the lower end.
