Success Stories: How to make Michael Saved $ 14K in six months $ 9 per hour -

michael traveling success story Greetings from Africa! Somewhere at the moment, I try to grab a photo of a lion without being eaten. Or I'm friending a honey badger. Meanwhile, this week I want to share stories from readers who have recognized you, your travel dreams in the hope of inspiring and shows that someone be your travel dreams come true!

Many people say you need to have a well paid job to make your trip. But Michael (27 years) had never one of those, but he managed to save even $ 14k in six months, while in producing $ 9 USD per hour! When he told me his story, I knew he was perfect for this week success story. He embodied the idea that someone will find the money for the trip. Without further ado, let's meet Michael and find out how you can save so much money for so little do

Nomadic Matt :. Tell everyone about yourself
Michael: I lived in Austin, Texas, before I became a citizen of the world. I always had a year off and travel would take around the world. I had little trips overseas in the past and would meet took so many travelers, the months or years to travel away. These people put the idea in my mind that I might be able to travel for extended periods of time. When I graduated from college, I spent a year and a half for an apprenticeship search, but could not find. I started the idea entertaining sell everything I own and take time out to travel a year, but still it does not seem to be really feasible. Since I could not find an apprenticeship, I got a job as a cook in a pizzeria in Austin. I was making only $ 9 per hour, plus tips.

How long you have to travel?
I had planned to be just a year away. As soon as I started researching how to travel the world, I came across several blogs of people words of encouragement and advisory services. I had RTW tickets saw and thought that was the best way to go. I had the organization and planning throughout the year started: which cities I would go, the cost of living in each country, etc. But then I thought, "How the hell anyone plan for a full year can" I was new in planning a trip, but still knew there just was no way to plan something for a whole year. Well, I'm just going to go with the flow and get away as long as possible.

This is the best way to go! What fears, if any, you have on your trip?
I was afraid of two things. At first I was afraid of what people would think. I wanted to embark on something very unorthodox, where I come from, and I knew that no one would understand. Instead people ask me why people were surprised that I actually had to do it the balls. My family was supportive and thought it would be a great experience; Friends were probably a little jealous, but they were supportive and could not believe what I was doing. Everyone thought I was crazy, but in a good way. I have 100% support from my friends and family. I still get all stay in touch regularly via email, Skype and Facebook.

The second fear, which I had on the trip, was himself. I thought What if I spend all the money and so much time wasting easy to have nothing, the way to work out that I want it to? But it was only anxious thinking creeps its way into my mind. The bottom line is, no matter what decision you make in life, you never know, if things work out for you. As long as you follow what your heart tells you to, things always worked quite well. To think that things are not working went against my newfound way of thinking. I have gone so far for two months, and already things have worked better than I thought.

Was there something specific about this site that you helped overcome these fears?
I was inspired by your site not to plan. That's one of the reasons why I like your blog so much, because it is written from the perspective of someone who is afraid waved and the social norms that prevent us from traveling and just went for it. I wanted that for so long but did not think it was possible until I started reading your site. In order to keep my inspiration alive before I went, I would say friends and family about you and tell them: ". Look, it's possible" When my friends told me I was crazy and that they will never be able to do it, I would e-mail them. Contributions from your website, so that perhaps they would inspire Or at least, they would have a better understanding of where I came from.

In addition, this site has helped me better to travel money from me to introduce saving techniques as WWOOFing and Couchsurfing who helped me save on accommodation. The site also gave me ideas on how to save you money on food that was something I originally thought that I would have a lot of money to spend, because everyone needs food to survive. After reading about local food I was inspired my budget to cut down even further when it comes to food. Not only the food locally adventurous and fun, but it really does not help to save a lot of money. They helped me to realize that the slower I go, the more money I save. If you are not a set itinerary and have nowhere to be your time and be received while from point A to point B, not only do you get to see more and take longer, but you have the opportunity to meet more people.

michael traveling Ok, tell us so, how the hell you have $ 15k stored in 6 months?
I I decided to save $ 15,000 wanted for my trip that out could take me a year. I only had to save half a year for my trip, so I had to be able to work my best to get $ 15,000. I say, I had only half a year, because I, in order to prevent, postpone the trip and disciplined me repeatedly, I booked my flight from the US the day I decided to make the world would travel.

At first I thought that I would get a second part ~~ POS = TRUNC, upping my total working hours to 60 per week. I was making only $ 9 USD per hour, so it's not like I the rich life. My boss ended me the hours I give wanted, so there was no need for a second job. In 60 hours, he gave me, I would other people eating hours when called out of work. On average, five months I worked about 65 hours a week. Life was hard, but I kept my goal in mind and fought through. In these six months I was on a budget: would limit I lie to drink once a week, eat from the work as much as I could, not so much my air conditioning use (that was the worst, as I live in Texas ), and try by not having to cut as much light my electricity bill. Basically I have my expenses into two columns: wishes and needs (a friend of mine came up with this money saving technology). Every time I had to spend money, I would ask myself whether there was a shortage or a need. If it were a shortage, I would usually come to the conclusion that it is a waste of money.

Apart from work, I was selling things to make money. I sold almost every electronic item I had, like my TV, guitar amplifiers, and so on. I I always thought these things might get later in life again when I wanted them. I also sold my car.

I did not really reach my goal of $ 15,000. I was close, but at about $ 14,000. The life of the work so many hours got to me, and I began to drink a lot with friends. though not only because of the work; I wanted so much fun to have with all that I before I went. I was not sure if I did it all back to see my friends, so I wanted to live there, but that's fine.

What about life on the road has surprised you the most?
How many people are willing to help you. I do not think people would give a damn about me; when I was lost thought I would "lucky child, can not help you!" say if I did not know how to communicate, I thought people would give, but nothing has been done about it. If I lost people will help me to find my way; if I can not communicate, the people are patient and honest trying to figure out what I'm trying to say. If I am lost and I can not communicate, most people tend to recognize my problem and then me in the right direction. Lost go and ask someone for directions is a good icebreaker at least. Some of my best conversations have begun to ask me the people how to get somewhere.

How do you stay on budget when you travel? I would think after living so frugal, before you leave that you would want to splurge on your trip.
Staying within budget is tough. Sometimes you want to eat a wonderful meal, and sometimes you just want to really get drunk. I have no problem with indulging from time to time. You should have fun while traveling, and eating and drinking in life are some of my favorite things. But you must remember to do these things in moderation. Before I left, I thought how much I spend every day, able for one year, the total savings would be given to be gone I have. I just stick to that. If I find myself in a surplus, then I'll be a good food and drink. If I am not, as I save my money. Budgeting is a science for me. I have research on the cost of living in different parts of the world to help my budget plan.

What is one thing that you thought would be a challenge not turned out to be?
I thought to be the biggest challenge, my way would be found to the countries where English is not spoken very well. And it is a challenge, but it's a fun challenge and not as frustrating as I thought it would be. Sometimes I end up in the wrong place, but I just laugh and enjoy where I am. The great thing about no time pressure while traveling is that if you want to be anywhere, it does not really matter where you are. Do not think about the goal, just enjoy the ride.

What advice would you offer to others who want to travel, but might not think they can?
I would tell them to make a list of all the reasons why they can not, then one by one come up with examples of how they could overcome against reason. I would also encourage people to read about others who have done the same to realize that it is possible and really not that hard.

Michael's story shows us that you do not need some high-paying job to travel. Even on a minimum wage job, if you are diligent enough, you can save enough around the world to travel. Michael made his trip a priority and cut all wasteful spending. If you save doubts about your ability to make money and travel - whether it is for a two-week, two months or two trip - you think about Michael. If he can do it while earning to $ 9 per hour, you can also do so!

If the next success story

One of my favorite parts about this job is to do people who travel stories. You inspire me, but more importantly, they also inspire you. I travel in a certain way, but there are many ways to finance your trips and travel around the world. I hope that these stories show that it will reach more than one way to travel, and that it is within your reach your destinations. Here other examples of people who have found a way to pay for their adventure around the world:

  • Why Trish everything they sold, possessed to travel
  • How 22- rescued years Lauren $ 18k for their epic adventure

we all come from different places, but we all have one thing in common :. we all want to travel more

Make today the day you take one step closer to travel -. whether it is buying a guide, create a hostel booking an itinerary or to go all the way and a ticket to buy

Do you remember, tomorrow may never come, so do not wait.
