Off the Beaten Track in Amsterdam
If the people of Amsterdam, they think generally of three things: coffee shops, red lights, and channels. And for most travelers, that's all they'll ever see. Young people tend to frequent the coffee shops or the Red Light District walking, while older travelers take tours, canal trips, and often the museums. Then, after three or four days, they move on to their next destination.
I fell in love with Amsterdam in 06 and have since been back to the city five times. Every time I get more of the city to explore and realize how much it has to offer. It always makes me sad when I hear talk with fellow travelers about what they have done, because it is always the same, and yesterday in Berlin, a traveler he thinks hated the city, because it all coffee shops and red lights was. I told him that he had not seen the city, and gave him a list of things to do next time.
After the city visit as often, I find myself always do a little off the beaten track. I keep ticking the list of things to do off and to find that I knew never existed. Amsterdam has a lot to offer travelers. If you are tired of coffee shops has grown, stoned backpackers, creepy old people in the red light district, and the crowds at the Van Gogh Museum, visit some of these quieter and local courts:
The Amsterdam History Museum
Although not exactly off the beaten path, this museum surprisingly few people looks even does a great job, tell the story of the city. The museum is quite large, so budget a few hours for them.
The Museum of Jewish History
Located near Waterlooplein This museum has an excellent section of the Second World War, the Holocaust, and how the Dutch dealt with the guilt of mass deportations after the war.
Tulip Museum
in a quiet space inside a tulip business, has this small town an interesting task, the history of tulips in Holland and the notorious tulip enthusiasm to tell. The best thing: you will never find a crowd
The Jordaan
I'm always amazed at how few tourists visit Jordaan, since it in the immediate vicinity. to the city Centre. The former working-class neighborhood is now a maze of cafes, small shops and restaurants. During the summer time, it is going a popular place for people to eat. I absolutely love about here.
FOAM
The photography museum houses wonderful pictures and sees few crowds despite the main part of town to be. It is a must for any photography lovers. I really enjoyed the all black and white photographs and the outdoor garden.
The Houseboat Museum
Not much of a museum, but this decorated houseboat is gives you an interesting insight into what is life on the canals as , I went with a glimpse of life on the canals. A little tight
Oost
The area east of the city has an amazing park, zoo, and lots of good Middle Eastern Restaurants. Walking around here, you'd be hard pressed to find more than a handful of tourists, most of which are likely to be lost.
Rembrandt Park
to confuse Not this park west of the city with Rembrandtplein in the city center, is a good place to wander. The area around it is quite working class and a bit more modern, a good contrast to the historic center. You know that you're there when signs suddenly in English will stop printing.
And while you're in Amsterdam, I recommend the Flying Pig hostel stay, my second hostel in Europe (Kabul in Barcelona is still 1 for me #). I have it now three times here and this time, thanks IKangaroo, I got a couple of nights free. The pig is an institution, Amsterdam. It might not be the cheapest hostel in town, but there is no push-button showers, the pillows are comfortable, and because of its good reputation, it is always full. I always meet a lot of people while I'm there, and the staff (backpackers who just can not leave) are very social. I have stayed at three different hostels in Amsterdam, but I always return to the Pig-he lives up to its reputation.
Amsterdam has so much to offer that it pigeonholing as a place of prostitutes, marijuana and a canal trip is a crime against humanity. There is so much to do, it is an architectural wonder, and the locals are very friendly. When you visit us, get to see from the tourist center of the hidden treasures and local neighborhoods, and find out that Amsterdam is anything you would not believe his.
